A crucial part of the self-consciousness of individuals and the way they define themselves socially is a perception of their location in a historical narrative, however vague. For most people in North America and Europe the narrative in question is that of 'Western Civilization' - this is true for all parts of the political spectrum and includes those who see this narrative as one of triumphant success and others who perceive it as a much darker story. However, the picture that emerges from historical research does not support any of these accounts. Rather they lead us to the conclusion that historic Western Civilization no longer exists but has perished or been transformed. This should make us think about how to understand our historical location and lead us to see past, present, and future in a new way.

I have to use 600% volume booster because loosers don't adjust volume accordingly. So lame.

men has for two occasions missed the appointment of civilisation and modernity, once with juluis cesar( many of you would laugh at it) and second time after the fall of Grenada and what used to be called Andalousia, Never man has been closer to this ideal we call now civilisation and which had been swept away as the speaker described it as this monster in Alien... it tells me a lot about the outcome of the civilisation as it is imagined and conceived and shapped... a monster. plz react.

agriculture uses a lot of land because we use so much of it for addiction-driven production....we do not need to grow meat or vegetables in a test tube, we need to address mass addiction to junk food and drugs and excessive clothing (cotton) that dominate the fields of our sustenance. we need to move from addiction to holistic health, and this will spare the land. nothing wrong with going vegetarian. nothing wrong with keeping your kids off of junk food. nothing wrong with quitting smoking, excessive drinking, or buying less.

I used to spew this same Appeal to Nature and anti-modernization nonsense. What you’re advocating will never be a practical solution. The reality is that we have to keep innovating.

@@Cable3999 what good is the mediocre consumer lifestyle either way, fed or unfed? what good is a silly unexamined life of gluttony resorting to eating out of test tubes? if we define "modern" by the gluttony of the times, it's pathetic no matter how you spin it. modern and holistic are not mutually exclusive. many modern folks eat and live holistically, they are just like any other modern, but living intelligently. a blob sitting on a sofa, no matter how modern, is still a blob sitting on a sofa.

I would say that the speaker scared the dust out of me. I hope he is wrong on every aspect of his prospection of the future. agriculture disappearing, living up to 700 or 800 hundreds years, I believe science will improve the quality of life and have a say and overcome many of the deseases which harvesting millions of lives every year. I think quite the opposite will happen; men as he pointed out, is re-inventing retro-spectivlly isn't it because there is some sens in it...plz react.

ah paraphrasing Ghandi. Been to India? Worked in Africa? Lived in Canada, the States and Europe? I have. For a say in government, for the rule of law, for the chance of a better life, I'll take the West.
