I've been learning about the seven habits in my college success class. I've been enjoying it. What's wild is I was ten when the book was first published and just learning about it at age forty-four, lol. These are genuinely great concepts. I wonder if his dad knew how many people his teachings would touch. Last week was the habit, Seek First to Understand Then to be Understood, that we reviewed in class. The most recent one was, Begin with the End in Mind. He was a brilliant man who has helped many people and continues to.😊❤

Stephen Covey's 7 Habits has had a profound impact on my career and my life. What a blessing it was to experience his teachings and to facilitate his programs. It's great to see the foundation of his work being carried on and built upon. "Green and Clean" is one of my favorite stories - such great wisdom related to effective and inspiring delegation, which then builds trust. Thanks for sharing this interview with his son!

22:45 You manage things, and you lead people. Be efficient with things, and effective with people. The danger comes when we start to manage people as if they were things. 30:40 Command and control is akin to managing people as if they were things. Works well for systems, processes and technology but doesn't work well with people. Trust and inspire - am I trying to maintain and contain people and things, or am I trying to unleash them? 32:00 People bring their whole self to work - their body, heart, mind and spirit - so try to INSPIRE THEM, not just MOTIVATE them. Inspiration is intrinsic, motivation is extrinsic. They operate on a different basis. 34:50 Military terms used in business around command & control type of leadership, rooted in systems, structures, language and paradigms. 39:10 Seeing leadership as stewardship - meaning it's a responsibility not just a right (jobs with a trust). Often leadership is defined as a position, that comes with rights. Leadership is INFLUENCE and a moral authority based on your credibility, character and competence rather than just position. 42:25 Behavioral = Humility and Courage, Authenticity and Vulnerability, Empathy and Performance. Authenticity means REAL. Today's there's so much fake out there that people want to know that what you see is what you get. People respond to being authentic and to people who are authentic. VULNERABILITY means to let people see into me - see what's real. Intimacy = INTO - ME - SEE. I'm open, transparent, and not trying to put on errs or a front. *It takes courage to be vulnerable.* There's some parameter, but we've got to be more vulnerable than we've been. Authentic leaders build TRUST, that builds TEAMS, and builds RELATIONSHIPS. 44:20 SHOWING VULNERABILITY: Headhunter for C-Suite in Tech industry - if people try to put on an err and try to act like a perfect candidate and don't show any vulnerability - he doesn't advance them or recommend them. If they don't show vulnerability, because people are not going to relate to them, they're not real, not being open and authentic and they won't connect with people and build teams and cultures. This is the kind of leadership people respond to today. 45:40 You can be great at your job, but if people don't want to work with you, spend time with you or follow you, then what good are you going to be in a senior role or a leadership role - the HUMAN aspect of leadership is very important. 46:20 In order for us to have trust, yes we have to be trustworthy, but we also have to be _TRUSTING._ Extend trust to others. 48:00 The biggest reason why employees don't trust their leaders in low-trust companies / cultures anywhere in the world is because the leaders first and foremost aren't trusting their employees - so the employees are reciprocating that distrust right back at them.. IF WE WANT TO HAVE TRUST, WE HAVE TO GIVE TRUST, we have to become more TRUSTING. (good judgement, SMART TRUST, always have expectations and accountability through the trust that's been given - build control through an AGREEMENT rather than micromanaging - that unleashes them and they perform better). *Trust is a two-way street.* 49:30 The next frontier of Leadership is moving toward INSPIRATION, next level vs. engagement. People will be happier and the culture will be better. 50:40 Inspiration =/= Charisma. It's about who they are, how they connect with people, and how they CARE. When people feel that you care about them, it not only influence them - it inspires them. "People don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care." 52:00 CARING, BELONGING, CONNECTING TO PURPOSE/MEANING/CONTRIBUTION. At the team level, it's about BELONGING, INCLUSION, the sense that I'M PART OF SOMETHING IMPORTANT & MEANINGFUL.
