Stephen O’Malley on Sunn O)))'s Bear design, mystery in symbolism & metal merch | Evil Greed

In the third episode of our interview series with Stephen O'Malley (shot at the EGHQ in 2022), the artist, musician, and composer discuss in detail the creation and background of one of our favourite pieces of merchandise, Sunn O))) 's 'Bear' design.
The 'Bear' long sleeve was designed for a Japanese tour. The Italian artist Stefano Maria Girardi-who specialised in experimental engraver artworks-created the motif based on Stephen's idea of a bear catching a salmon. The motif references the Pacific Northwest, where Greg Anderson and Stephen O'Malley grew up. The motif also found its roots in Engine Kid, Greg's band in the 90s.

You take for example the cliché in metal,”Let’s open this pit up!” Well, the power in Sunn0)) is…”how does one know this pit within when opened can be closed or if indeed it’s open nature can merely be quantified within an iota of darkness..”
