It may not be exhaustive, but it is exhasting. The life and times of the king of musical theatre, Stephen Sondheim! (Also I left out "Assassins." Sondheim wrote it with John Weidman and it premiered in 1990. Also "The Frogs," but you probably didn't even notice that one was missing.)

If you're reading THIS comment below with your favorite decade of Sondheim. - that's how I'll know you read this far. 😉 I think the 70s would have to be my favorite. He seemed to just bleed art during those years.
Oh, and would you click that like button? Love you forever.

I saw Passion as a day tripper from New Haven with an old friend. I guess it wasn't what we expected. Exiting the lobby, I said, "Oh Brad. We could have gone to see Cats." Brad said, "No, it is important to have seen this. And to not have seen Cats."

My favorite Sondheim decade would be the 2000s, a decade filled with amazing revivals. There were two great productions of my favorite Sondheim piece (Company), a fantastic Sweeney Todd revival, an incredible West Side Story revival (with LMM collaboration), and a cool Into the Woods revival, as well as the original Broadway production of assassins. So many productions of his genius work, all unique, interesting, and brilliant in their own rights.

I was just gonna say, "Assassins..." until i saw you mention it in your caption. Not only the original, but the "revival" in 2004 when it was on Broadway for the first time and won 5 Tonys, making it the biggest winning show that year.

Wendla Bergman don't forget Adrian Lester, the first black actor to be cast as Bobby in the Sam Mendes directed 1995 London revival. Also note worthy are John O'May & David Campbell in the 1986 & 2007 Australian productions.

It's funny. Sondheim is worshiped as a God in the USA. Everyone thinks he's brilliant etc. The likes of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Frank Wildhorn on the other hand are looked upon with disdain and contempt. And yet, you step outside the USA and both those composers musicals are widely popular. Stephen Sondheim on the other hand is completely irrelevant and no one cares for him or his shows (with Sweeney Todd being the exception to the rule and his only popular work). If his works were actually never much popular on Broadway as it is, I wouldn't be surprised if the "adversities" he's facing these days are just Broadway audiences finally catching up with the tastes of the rest of the World.
