He's had hard times: points, even fairly recently, when he couldn't get shows produced. For years, the big thing on Broadway has been adaptations of movies with scores by pop stars, and none of the money people had time for an elderly legend who insisted upon doing original work. Only the serious theater nuts know who he is, whereas suburban and tourist audiences - which a show absolutely needs to make money - all know popular movies, and will pay the big bucks to see them performed live.

The thing about Sondheim is each of his shows is so completely different from all the others, yet each one a masterpiece. In that way, he's like Beethoven, who never repeated himself, each of his works is like a new problem he is trying to solve, the sounds from some different universe he inhabited. And believe me, I don't make that comparison lightly. I share your admiration for Sweeney Todd, though I think it is really "Company" that got the ball rolling and redefined what the American musical could do. And each of the musicals you mention is more than worthy of its success, with West Side Story being in a class of its own.

John Williams has some interesting musical theatre roots that intersect, if only briefly, with Sondheim. He was married to Barbara Ruick, who played Carrie in the movie version of Rodgers & Hammerstein's *Carousel.* He was the soundtrack pianist for the original 1961 movie version of Bernstein & Sondheim's *West Side Story.* Early in his career, he orchestrated and conducted three big-screen musicals: Leslie Bricusse's *Goodbye, Mr. Chips* (1969), Bock & Harnick's *Fiddler on the Roof* (1971), for which he won his first Academy Award, and the Sherman Brothers' *Tom Sawyer* (1973). He even wrote a stage musical, *Thomas and the King* (1975), which was intended for Broadway, but only played London briefly (it does have a cast album, though).

The one trully magnificent thing about this amazing human being..is that he will live for decades on end..he will live much after we're all gone (and I'm in my early 30s) because his music is everlasting and it will continue to live as it passes generations...he will never actually be gone..and he is a part of that amazing group of people who pass on...but never actually die..how can one die when you hear Being Alive, No one's gonna harm you, and so on..? Glad he got to see his last work in previews..he can rest now. Stephen, you'll live forever, man! Everytime someone in this huge but small world will sing one of your songs..you'll live again..and again..and forever. Thank you!

Having only admired his work from afar before, I saw a new production of A Little Night Music at my local theatre in Chester, England three years ago and was blown away by the sheer quality of the songs. I now think there's nobody to beat him today in marrying words with music, either in musical theatre or opera. His works will be the ones that are still revived in 100 years time, not Lloyd Webber's and especially not the awful Les Miserables! And it's so wonderful that we may yet see another Sondheim musical - I can't wait!

@@calisongbird I think A Little Night Music is his greatest work. I was lucky enough to see it on Broadway with the original cast (and what a cast it was). It remains the single most memorable musical theater experience of my life. 🎭

I agree with you completely but have a minor quibble. Les Miz is not Weber’s but it is still better than Weber’s most popular musical, Phantom of the Opera 😊
