I learn more from you than I ever did in my expensive university degree. Thank you for your generosity in sharing your skills and knowledge. It is so hard to find in rural Australia!

A good teacher like Stephen would not leave a single detailed unexplained. Thanks for the suggestion about the lips' edges.

Great video! I really loved how you explained the inverted background lighting. I was asking myself in the last video if that was done on purpose, and you gave such a thorough and convincing explanation. Thanks for sharing!

Stephen, Thanks for your videos. I didn't paint since some years ago... And I only do digital illustration. But with your teaching I retake my oils and Here we are! :D

Maravillosa lección. Hace años que solo dibujo con acuarela, pero me entran ganas de trabajar con óleo otra vez. Gracias!

I would say that the reason your from photo artworks look like they were done with a real live model is because you treat the production of the artwork as if you were looking at a model and not intending to reproduce a photo (which is not necessarily a bad intention or approach in itself). As usual thanks for sharing.

Trank you very much Stephen! Only 2 questuons- how long should the first Block in dry before painting again on the face (2d Block-in)? And do you apply the light colours thinner to let the canvas white shine through? Ir do you put more white?? Thank you very much. I am painting a portrait of my Muse 👍

The 1st answer is, as long as it takes for the paint to dry. Different colors and oils dry at different rates so it's hard to give a generic timeframe. 2nd is, I add more white.

The grisaille block in should be lighter as subsequent layers will darken the image especially over time

What’s a good commercially available white that I can substitute for the lead white you used for this lesson? Flake white?
@stephenbaumanartwork
@stephenbaumanartwork 3 жыл бұрын
Lead white and flake white are mostly the same thing, just refers to the manufacture process. If you had to use an alternative most people will choose zinc.
