Best of luck with your first ultra. I still remember mine - a totally epic day! It will all go terribly wrong pretty early on and you'll be left with a choice - quit or carry on. If you're not actually injured, carry on. you never know what will happen later on. I should have quit in my first ultra - i started way too fast (a 1km steep uphill race to the top of a mountain) and that screwed me for the rest of the race. I finished dead last, and i still hold the course record for the longest time on the course. So for your first one, set some goals by all means, but be prepared to set other ones during the race. The only goal you need to stick to is finishing. There is no other feeling like crossing the finish line with nothing left in the tank, after everyone else has gone home, had a shower, gone out for dinner, maybe started a family and generally moved on with their lives. Starting slow is the key. Keeping moving is the answer, enjoying the crap out of the day is the secret, that will keep you coming back for more. 🙂 Best of luck.

Thanks for the advice! Deliberately going with a very non technical one to start with so all I need to worry about is keeping on moving and thankfully no cut-offs so if I can move, I'll be making it over the line! Plan to take it really easy.

Everything you're describing on this run. Is what goes through my mind. Also the woozy feeling. I always put it down to my ADHD. I have so much energy but then when it's gone. It's like a smuck in the face and I start panicking and thinking I'm going to die 😅😅😅

Thanks Colin. I lost my running mojo for nearly a year, only thing that kept me at it was the fact I was being paid to promote races. This year I want to run, got back to the club too. Hope you get back out soon. Yeah the ultra will be vlogged 🥵

Great memories of running along that path Stephen, some years ago now though. Having barely run in 14 years, I've brushed the dust off my Inov8's and signed up to the Malvern Hills Ultra, 12 training weeks left, did a 17 miler over the first part of the route on Saturday through a sea of mud, half way point was a brewery with a wood fired pizza bus outside so a jolly day out! Looking forward to your next episode. It's definately all about nutrition. Train hard, fight easy!

we spotted a heron on that path last we were down there, near the holy lands, it had caught the biggest eel id ever seen, and because we startled it, the thing tried to swallow it and fly off. I swear it was about 4 feet long! @@StephenJReid

I literally went for my first run in ages yesterday, 8k, got right knee pain and then saw this video today 😂. No ultras on the horizon for me though. Just cross training for bike packing. I've bonked on the bike more than a few times on that tow path as my friend lived in Lisburn.

I'm doing to opposite, easy bike rides as recovery and also to slowly build up for bikepacking later in the year.

good luck on the ultra, Stephen. 💪 i´m running a half marathon in 11 days so can take some points of your training here. Running slower than the usual pace helps a lot 😅 have to do a test long run with liquid and gels to see how my body will respond to it still. P.S. do you know of any good trail running company from (Northern) Ireland? (don´t want all the stupid Brexit hassle with companies from UK😬)
@StephenJReid10 ай бұрын
Best of luck in 11 days! Hmmm there aren't really any trail running companies from Northern Ireland, if by that you mean ones that sell products. Plus we are in the UK. There are a couple of cycling brands though. The Republic or Ireland, is not in the UK and is in the EU. Yes its very confusing.
@nejcpilih10 ай бұрын
@@StephenJReid I know the confusion. but as far as I know, Northern Ireland has a special thing going on, where companies form there can sell to EU and UK market without any obstacles. so i thought maybe you have there anything similar to Harrier Trail running thing, which would give us (EU people) some good products. 😅 I´ll try to do some research more on EU brands👍

If you can only add 10% at a time. How would you ever build up to doing an ultra marathon 🤷 so you can only do one mile extra each week and you need to be able to do say 31 miles. Then if y'all are planning on doing say 50 miles. So I guess it would take you like a year to build up to maybe 50 mi. After writing all this I've seen that maybe it is possible 🤣😜
