Great video. I've just invested in some gear and plan my first wild camp this weekend weather permitting Although I'll be bringing my dog, partly for company but mainly to feel safer. But am looking forward to it and hopfully it'll be the first of many.

I think I may have run into you on Commedagh, pretty sure I have you just appearing in the distant mist in my photo (posted on the Northern Ireland reddit). As always, astonishing footage and adventure! 4:20 would be my favorite shot disappearing in the background; I cannot imaging what you go through taking some of these footage back and fourth with the camera, walking away then going back to get it, such a pain LOL - I wish there was a way for a flying mirrorless camera with unlimited battery life to follow you around at different angles and take more astonishing footage without going back to pick it up, wouldn't that be fun? Keep at it, Stephen funny man! Great Job! note: Oh yeah I know you live in Ireland but every time I see footage of Scotland I think of you because the fauna and flora are so similar between the two places, maybe I am wrong! Cheers!!!
@StephenJReid
@StephenJReid Жыл бұрын
Thanks John! That’s one of my favourite shots too and one that too the longest as I wanted a very particular framing for it. Also had to walk quite a distance uphill and back to walk out of view. I find if I give myself loads of time for these kinds of shoots that it’s quite a relaxing way to climb a mountain. Walk a bit, stop shoot some footage. Move on. Requires a slower pace and means you take more time to look around and appreciate what you can see but also to think through how to incorporate it into a story and how it will look on camera. A few sections of this are out of sequence as the shots worked best for the story in a certain order. Yeah ireland and Scotland are visually very similar. Scotland has a lot more mountains though and a lot more snow. There’s ski resorts in Scotland, none in Ireland.

Great video Stephen! I'd like to see some BTS filming techniques (as a suggestion for a video), where you can tell us some of the ways you capture your content [and maybe not give away your secrets 🙂] Always entertaining to watch and also gives me some insight into Northern Ireland scenery. I'm from South Africa and we don't really get to see snow, so I've always wondered how people stay dry ... is it up to the clothing you wear ? snow = water = wet ? 🙂
@StephenJReid
@StephenJReid Жыл бұрын
Thanks Joe! 🙂 the problem with doing BTS of a shoot like this when I’m solo is I have to do twice as much work and it distracts me from what I’m trying to do. Same thing if I bring someone to film me, I struggle to have the same focus. I’ll maybe figure it out someday. Snow is only wet when it melts so as long as it’s below zero it’s a lot more pleasant than being out in even light rain. It crusts up around your trouser legs and shoes but stays frozen until you get back down. The worst thing that can happen on a hike like this in terms of being cold is to get your gloves or boots wet on the inside. Once your feet are cold it’s very hard to warm them up while you’re still out.

I enjoyed this one, what camera are you using now?
@StephenJReid
@StephenJReid Жыл бұрын
Depends on the video what kit I use. But for higher quality shoots like this I'm either using Sony A7siii or Sony A7iv. Will also be making videos with GoPro Hero11, Insta360 X3, DJI Mini 3 Pro & iPhone. I vary the camera combo depending on how much time I'll have, the style I'm going for and even how many people will be there. If I'm on my own the production value is higher as I've got the time to stop and set up shots more.
@Premier_lawns_official
@Premier_lawns_official Жыл бұрын
@@StephenJReid thanks for the reply. I bought the A7iv a few months back. I'm kind of struggling to get the most out of it, all the gear and no idea haha. Maybe I should just stick to grass cutting haha. I wanted something I could use and not worry about a gimbal all the time and it ticks that box. I was also planning on starting to shoot in 4k, but now have it that seems less important to me. I did a half day camera course with Paul Crawford and what I took from that was to keep it in auto! Can you recommend anyone that teaches camera/video work locally or is that a service you offer?
@StephenJReid
@StephenJReid Жыл бұрын
@@Premier_lawns_official I mostly shoot my videos with manual settings or partly manual. Rarely do full manual. A7iv is an amazing camera. Yeah I've done 1 to 1 camera training in the past. Costs a lot more than signing up to an online class, but sometimes the 1 to 1 can be more useful. I'd probably review some of your videos first and try and plan something that would be relevant. If you were interested, drop me an email on stephen@graftersmedia.com Was the camera course with Paul about video or photography?
