Its great of you to discuss your mistakes because we learn so much more from our errors. Thanks for all the videos you do, its a great help and a reason i have gone back to my architectural sketches 👍👍👍

Architecture it such a great drawing subject, and The exactness it demands can sharpen our skills we then take into other subject areas. I’m very glad I’ve helped encourage you back there. All the best with it Jalal. 😀

Thanks Sarah. I hope it’s helpful. And shows drawing’s a process for all of us. Highly edited videos can be very misleading and unhelpful. And fortunately I’ve reached an age where I’ve long stopped trying to seem perfect! 😆

Wonderful drawing as always, I would have liked you to paint shadows with some grey markers.

Thanks Jose. It came down to time. It was already a really long video. Maybe I can video a similar scene which starts with the line work finished and make it about the tone. Stay tuned. 😀

Great video! One question: Any difference when drawing from a photograph and drawing in front of the site? I know the photo would definitely distort the perspective. Do we need to undo this distortion when drawing from a photo? It seems that you used the pencil to make sure that all structural lines were drawn in the right angle. If this is the key to get the perspective right, an easier approach is to determine the spot of the varnishing point before drawing the structure. This will make it easier for the students to understand and follow your procedure. Just a suggestion.

Photos can distort the vertical lines, depending on closeness and tilt angle. We can undo it when we draw if we want. Sometimes it adds drama. The problem with VPs is they can be so far off the paper to be impractical. Tho understanding the concept is usually helpful. 😀

When faced with a photo like this or a cathedral interior, is it better to freehand or start from vanising points?

For freehand drawings I use my pen to measure angles. I don’t find it practical try to draw vanishing points, since they are usually off the page. And if I’m not drawing freehand I use a 4x4 grid on paper and photo, so I don’t need to draw vanishing points then either. I think the emphasis on them in traditional perspective videos is generally unhelpful for the non-architect artist - although it is good to understand the principle to help us observe more carefully in our freehand drawing. I have videos on all these issues. 😃

@Stephen Travers Art Don't worry, I'll take a look at all of them. I've been a "manga artist" for a while, but I've never really looked into perspective or architecture all that much from the basic 1 point to 5 point perspective. Seeing your work and the work of some other channels has been surreal, to say the least, these last 2 weeks. Anatomy and characters are 1 thing, but what you do here on your channel is a whole other planet of information. I always thought 3pt perspective was cool because of the scale. I HAD NO IDEA what 2 points perspective was really capable of until today. There is a crapton of applications from stairs to bridges, and i can go on. Do you have an instagram? If so, I'd like you to critique my early architecture works before starting this journey.
