Does drawing from a reference image help improve drawing skills or does one need to only draw from life?

Absolutely. There are challenges in drawing from life that we don’t learn drawing from photos, but especially if we draw freehand in ink, there is a lot of overlap. Lots of practice in observation and translation of visual image into marks and lines. And very accessible when being on location is not possible. 😀
