Yes yes YES! I totally get this with nature, and it has improved my skills by mounds. But then I go to add a house into the nature and I freeze up! I was about to get out my ruler and pencil and then I said, let me watch a Stephen travers video first….boy did you bust me🤣

These are great ideas. It is so easy to get lost in all the possibilities. With the overwhelming amount of videos and tutorials with a zillion different artists it becomes so confusing. I think it is important to find a couple of artists that you resonate with and stick with them as opposed to watching a lot of videos by a lot of different people. You just get lost in trying to integrate to many different approaches to get a handle on any of them. I really appreciate your willingness and emphasis on the Why we are doing something. Understanding that grounds me in my efforts.

Thank you Stephen. You are 100% correct. Its exactly what i ha e been doing. Jumping around and running out to buy more art supplies. I spent so much money on watercolors, but i havent even gotten good in 2 and 1/2 yrs because now im into acrylics. I really like urban sketching and thats what i wanted to do. But i didnt focus on just that. I also have been trying to copy everyones work and i have never tried using my own creativity. I will keep in mind everything you just said. Thank you.

I completely agree with you. I realized I was only copying drawings, when I try to draw my face from memory and I couldn't. I was shocked, I look at myself everyday and my brain gave me a "symbol" of what I look like. By drawing, I realized, literally, I didn't know myself. *Mind Blown*. Although watching your videos, sometimes, give me an existential crisis. I really enjoy them. I learn more philosophy from you then a degree did.

The difference in a gifted artist-such as yourself-and someone who is just trying-is the gift you have of seeing angles, etc. we don’t see lines the same way a gifted artist sees them. THERE IS A MAJOR DIFFERENCE IN THE BRAIN OF A GIFTED ARTIST AND OTHERS WHO TRY TO DRAW.

I mainly draw comic and cartoon and I always loved those spontaneous gestural architecture drawings, the challenge I’m facing is to switch my thinking as each style requires a different approach or a mind set I’m feeling like a footballer who wants to learn basketball lol

I do have a problem with drawing trees, and probably your remarks about using marks, not lines, hits close to home, although I don't "feel" how to practically do it. Problem might be, that I spent quite some time in finding lines and shapes, and measuring proportions from them. Trees (or any other fractal pattern) are the nemesis to that. I have a mild childhood trauma related to trees, because I used to see a lot of faces in those waving branches and twigs, and a lot of those faces looked so angry or spiteful, that I physically started walking long detours just to avoid getting too close to them. I always wanted to learn how to draw those faces, so I could show other people, what I was so afraid of as a child, but when I looked at other people drawing trees, I often felt, like they were just symbolizing any tree, rather than going into enough details with a specific tree for even a chance to spot those faces. But when I start drawing from those very faces, the result usually does not remotely look like a tree, which is unsatisfactory as well. The proportions are just off by a mile, and I find no way to show the merging of those faces into their surroundings.

I would start at the top, but put marks to indicate key points of the length and width to help me stagger the drawing within the proportions I wanted. 😀

I appreciate your emphasis on creative translation and observation. Personally, my brain just doesn't cover the details properly for me to prepare as much as I would like (I'll focus on the wrong areas, too - giving it more time doesn't make it better, either) - I try to handle it by repeat observations from small to large scales on various features and their relations to other objects as I draw.

I obviously enjoy the architecture-based drawings, and they would be at least a couple of hundred out of the 500 odd videos I’ve posted. I’m sure there are some you haven’t seen. But nature subjects are a better and more obvious way to teach many of the skills I use in the architecture drawings, such as drawing the effect of detail that are used in my architecture drawings, but more obvious as a concept in a tree. I have a video on why I repeat when I teach, but fundamentally it’s because it’s an excellent learning technique. And my intent is to teach drawing, not showcase my drawings. I have Instagram for that if you’re interested. Even my most ardent subscribers don’t see every video I make, so I can’t assume knowledge just because it’s in a previous video. For all that, I know I won’t be the best teacher for every student., and there’s nothing wrong with that for either of us. All the best with your drawing.
