I cannot believe I have wasted so much time and money for classes to learn about perspective. I really thought it was me who was the problem as all of this work has not helped me to draw/sketch. I have almost given up on this goal to learn to draw. Thank you so much for this and your other videos. I wish I had found them sooner. Thanks so much! Becky

That’s so great to hear Becky. All the best with pushing on. Yes, it’s a big mistake to always assume the problem is ourselves, rather than the material. Thanks for the encouragement. 😀

I've been struggling with learning perspective for the last month and only just found your videos today! I wished I would have seen these sooner, they make the subject easy to understand and answer many of the questions I always asked while studying! Thank you for making this content free and accessible!

Bingo! Bango! You've hit the nail on the head. Thank you. Not only are you knowledgeable and skillful, but you can teach properly. I figured the obscurity of info in other vids was because the producer wanted to keep it a secret. Or, like as you said, that I was the problem. You're brilliant and appreciated. Cheers!

Yea. I tried and failed so many times . I just use the box to give the sense of perspective. When I draw now I just estimate or sight the guidelines with out worrying about the perspective being technically accurate.

Wow! I thought it was me not being able to applicate the theory. I always felt stupid in front of an urban scene because I could not see the connection between the theory I had studied and what was actually in front of me.

That’s great to hear Loreta. Used as an aid to observing what we’re seeing it can be helpful, but lots of it is not relevant to many scenes. 😀

Point four is (was) my personal demon - struggled for a long time and sometimes still do. But your last advice is the most important: Learn to watch carefully and exactly, I'm going to follow your other videos, as this was the first one I found from you. Thank You so very much!

Long before there were KZbin videos, my junior high art teacher gave us a unit on drawing in perspective. I loved it and got a very good grade for my imaginary cityscapes. (Very imaginary as this country girl had only been to the big city a few times at that age) But I got very frustrated later when I tried to draw anything I saw, because the vanishing points were almost always off the table! Thank you for your explanations.

Thanks Carol. Often the problem is t what is said, but it’s what we’re not told. The problem with videos is we don’t usually get to ask questions. Glad this has helped clear some things up for you.

Excellent videos!! It would be very interesting to see your approach on drawing an unusual (liminal) space like a swimming hall from inside of the building.
@stephentraversart
@stephentraversart Жыл бұрын
It’s not the sort of space I really draw I suppose, but i would start with the framing box that the curved roof would sit within and work out done of the ellipses down the length if I were creating it from imagination. 😀

Hi Stephen, amazing and instructive video as always, I have been scratching my head at a particular problem I can't seem to understand, I was wondering if you could help me understand, at the picture in 3:41 the perspective line is above the horizon, but every guide/tutorial I have seen shows that the perspective line/eye level is always on the horizon line, is this an instance of some buildings going to an inclined vanishing point?
@stephentraversart
@stephentraversart Жыл бұрын
The eye level can sit on the horizon, or very close to it. But it doesn’t have to. Which is why thinking eye level equals the horizon is a big mistake. It’s why calling the eye level the horizon is a bigger mistake, because it’s confusing to use the same word for two different things. Does this make sense?😀
@zerospears329
@zerospears329 Жыл бұрын
@@stephentraversart Yes, thank you ^^ Does that mean it's impossible for the eye level to be far away from the horizon?
@stephentraversart

It at all. If the viewer is up high it can be well above the line where the land and sky meet - a line also affected by how level the ground is and how high above sea level it is.
