I’m learning to purl Portuguese style, and it is very easy for me and less stress on my hands.

I do it that way too! The person who was teaching me knitting told me I was doing it wrong, but it does the same thing. Happy to see others doing it this way too.

I’m an English style knitter. I’m not very speedy due to health issues but I enjoy the process so that’s the main thing! Just cast on your Boneyard shawl today and loving it! ❤

I purl exactly like you 😄 i tried all the other ways and I honestly gave other methods a good run, but always come back to my continental purls, and I love them. And I find this method it the most comfortable and fastest. 😊 love the way you talk, it sounds like you are reading interesting book to a toddler, gives a lot of cozines and comfort 😄

I also purl (and knit) with the yarn in my left hand but I tension it differently. ❤️ your videos!

Love these close up videos. I've never had good luck purling as I can't get the movement of the yarn around the needle the way it needs to go. This video might help. I will give it a try.

Love to see your technique 😊 I purl "norwegian style" i guess. The yarn is behind the left needle at all time and it's not "flipped" back and fort as you do, it's the right hand needel that does most of the motion. I had to stop using the pinky for tension as it caused tension up my left arm.

I pretty much purl English I guess, to me it doesn't feel any different than knitting!! Other than the yarn is in front. 🤷 I'm glad you show it without all the finger wrapping.... I too just pinch my yarn & have a nice even tension. I honestly don't understand why people complain about purling, it's not hard.

I either purl combination or Norwegian. Both work for me and doesn’t bother my arthritis.

I knit in"English style" but for purl stitches, I pass the yarn underneath (and not on top) and knit to the back loop, it seems to be the Swiss method!!!! It also makes very pretty ribbing

I live on the continent (Italy) but surprise! my grandmother taught me sort of English-style knitting. I purl with yarn in front, holding it in my right hand.

wow! I had not noticed how in the continental purl, the right hand needle goes behind the needle before the yarn wraps around it. Maybe that is why I had some trouble and went back to my English style. thanks!

I'm doing a baby blanket in double Moss stitch using. Keeps my tension even. That's easy to do the Pearl. I did another baby blanket doing corner to corner. Using the same method of knitting we're all I did was Pearl the whole entire time.

This is really helpful because despite “creating” a successful continental purl for years it doesn’t work in brioche. Now to unlearn so I can relearn!

I simply cannot get the yarn to tension with my little finger gripping the yarn against my ring finger. You explain it well but the yarn will not stay between these two fingers to tension.

I would love to learn Continental and maybe someday I will. My left hand is not very mobile. I am very right side dominant. So all of that movement with the left index finger is very difficult. Right now, my left hand basically holds the left needle and my left index finger will help to push the right needle after the yarn wrap and that’s about it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I'm an English-style knitter but it seems that the technical description for what I do is "flicking" rather than "throwing". This year I've been trying to add continental style knitting to my repertoire. I can now manage both knit and purl but the yarn tends to slither over my left index finger after making a stitch and my tension is still "stick and jerk" rather than slide. More practice required I guess.

Often times I struggle to keep the result of purls and knits to look the same. I think it's easier on knits to keep the bump closer to the size of the needle. Purls on the other hand tend to be less uniform and I will look back in a series of purls and some of the bumps will be way lower than I would like it comparatively. This results in me having to go back and pull extra yarn from a few stitches and slows down a purl row significantly. What advice do you have for equalizing the two different techniques to make stockinette stitches look more uniform?

Sometimes I purl by wrapping the yarn around the needle the opposite way to make a slightly smaller purl stitch. This mounts the stitch backwards on the right needle so when I get back to in on the other row, I just knit or purl this stitch through the back loop.

I hold the yarn in my right hand, but rest the needle like holding a pencil and flick the yarn without really dropping the needle. I’ve heard it described a French hold - but not certain that’s a real thing.

More emphasis on the wrap “direction” is needed. Counter clockwise will give you the properly mounted stitch. I was wrapping clockwise because I couldn’t see exactly what you were doing. My next row of knit , the stitches were all mounted wrong but no problem I just knitted into the back loop to correct that row. Slowed the video down and now I’ve got it! I think the knitting looks better continental but I’m still faster English. But thankyou for your great videos on technique.❤
