The very first time I ever grabbed my moms hand and dragged her into a store and made her buy me an album, was when I heard Steve Earle's Guitar Town playing on the radio when I was 4. I played that cassette until it couldn't play it's music anymore. 35 years later, I still love it just as much. In that time I've listened to, and made, a lot of music. Except for maybe a couple of songs I've written that are closest to the deepest parts of whats inside of me, no music has meant as much to me as what that first album's ignition roared awake in my soul. Until, that is, I heard Stephen's music. Turns out, his key fits the same. It's not often it happens, but it does, on ocassion. And it's always a magical moment when that happens.

Every time I listen to SWjr I can't help but feel like he's created an entirely new branch of outlaw country all by himself. Argue he isnt "country" all you want, but the truth is he's got country written all over him. Look at Waylon and Hank way back when and the parity is unmistakable. With mass media a shambles and corporate music production even worse, men and women like this are pretty much carrying the heart of true music all by themselves and redefining EVERYTHING. If you care to notice, all through music history this kind of innovation and growth has ALWAYS been the real driving force in music, not the corporate productions and media deals and promotions. That's all just vultures trying to cash in and take the spotlight. There are no more producers putting in the work and taking the hits to promote and support original material with heart because they believe in it. It's all about finding a product, getting it reliably profitable, packaging it and selling it as long as possible. Artists like this and many others today, (Samantha Fish comes to mind), are here at the right time. The very young and still ignorant might still be buying into the saccharin sweet media trash, but far more folks are wanting something of substance again. This stuff is exactly that. Just truly good music that'll stay evergreen forever. Love this guy. Edited to add, I'd love to see him join Samantha Fish on one of her endless tour shows. It'd be amazing.
