I'm lucky enough to have been exposed to many genres of music in my youth. RIP August 1, 2017, He was known as Goldy McJohn, a Canadian keyboard player best known as the original keyboardist for rock group Steppenwolf. Originally a classically trained pianist, he was a pioneer in the early use of the electronic organ (Hammond B3) in heavy metal. Their LP that had this and Born to be Wild almost cost me a divorce.

I remember 1983 driving down a road in Charleston SC one day, where I was stationed, blasting "Candy-O" by the Cars on the stereo. Yes, some rock is meant to be set at volume level 10. I'm paying for that now, what with loud rock and two years on the flightline as an aircraft crew chief during my time there. Those jets can be loud. Not too bad, though, just a very slight loss of some midrange hearing. My computer with iTunes is in the shop, but I can plug my iPod or CDs into a tabletop stereo. iPod and CDs. Am I dating myself?

Yes, you should do In-a-gadda-da-vita. But you must do either the 17 minute album version or the 17 minute official video version. I haven’t found anything else that had the drum solo correct in it. As JR above said you get great organ, guitar, and drums in all of it.

This song reminds me of my older brother working on is '67 red Mustang when I was but 6 or 7 years old....he played Steppenwolf's 8-track with MAGIC CARPET RIDE all the time while he was juicing up his mustang with all the things that made those muscle cars back then go faster. In short, the song reminds me of oily smells and Summertime as a kid.

I'm with you there... always loved the sound of a Hammond, whether stock or worked over like this one. When Suzuki bought the rights to the Hammond name, everyone thought the organ they would produce would be a joke, a Hammond organ in name only... they were WRONG. They had over a dozen Hammond organs shipped over, everything from bone stock to highly modified ones like you just heard. And, they flew musicians over to play them, too. Top name blues artists, gospel artists, and rock artists. There is literally no difference in the sounds of an original Hammond organ and Suzuki's Hammond. Amazing considering the Suzuki is all digital while the original Hammond wasn't actually an electronic organ at all... but rather a mechanical organ electronically amplified. It had a START switch you had to use to get the shaft containing all of the tone wheel generators to start spinning, and a run switch to keep it going. Even more amazing is ALL of the Hammond tones are in it... from bone stock all the way up to the full on modified rock jobs. And yet, the Suzuki one guy can carry. The Hammond B3 took four men and a small boy as the saying goes. If you want to hear a Suzuki Hammond really doing its stuff, check out "Robert Cray Cookin' in Mobile 2010" on KZbin. The song at the 37 minute mark has an organ solo that does just that... it's cookin'. And, he steps it up from stock sound through two notches of the 'blues' modified sounds. Actually, if you like blues the whole concert is really good, but on that one, the organ really wails. When he kicks it up the last time you can really heard the difference... man that thing really rips it. Why I learned guitar instead of keyboards is beyond me. And now, with Arthritic pain in my index and middle fingers on my left hand... so much for playing the guitar :(

My older brother listened to Steppenwolf and since we shared the same bedroom I listened to them as well. I was ten years old in '69 and thanks to my two older brothers I got to listen to and enjoy some great music. Magic Carpet Ride is one of those songs I heard so many times I got sick of hearing it. This live version was killer though. I really enjoyed it. Everything I ever read about John Kay said that he was against drug use/abuse and even kicked a couple of guys out of the band for using drugs. The Pusher is a song worth listening to.

In his day, John Kay was the coolest frontman in rock music. Steppenwolf had so many great songs in the late 60's - early 70's. There is no one like them. Bluesy, political, and a sound all their own. Still one of m y favorite bands... Their music never gets old. Check out "Don't Step on the Grass, Sam" or "Hippo Stomp"for some social commentary that's still relevant today.

Most people dont recall that this was one of two Steppenwolf songs (along with Rock Me Baby) that appears in the 60's movie CANDY starring several famous people including Ringo Starr & Richard Burton. It was based on the first mainstream erotic/porn novel that made the rounds through the country ..I ran across a seriously dog-eared copy while in Jr High. The lyrics of both song reflect the movie/book contents.

Standard of the Vietnam War. They officially retired the band October 24,2018. Steppenwolf is the German name for the wolf of the steppe. Specifically, John Kay got the band’s from Hermann Hesse’s novel “Der Steppenwolf “ John Kay was born in Nazi Germany as Joachim Fritz Krauledat. His father was killed on the Eastern Front before he was born. His mother fled west with him ahead of the Soviet advance, but the division of Germany placed them in Communist East Germany. His mother fled with him again to the British Zone of Germany. Later they emigrated to Canada. Fascinating life.

Broke my heart when Steppenwolf played their farewell gig this past fall. I have followed them since I was a kid, own all their releases, and am a huge fan. If you don't know the story of John Kay's life, it's incredible and worth seeking out to read. His autobiography is also called Magic Carpet Ride. Michael Wilk on keyboards, Danny Johnson on guitar, and Ron Hurst on drums in this video kept the Wolf legend alive for the past 30 years. The earlier lineups of the band were also killer and their recordings have stood the test of time oh so well. Original keyboardist Goldy McJohn (RIP) was also a powerhouse and a hard act to follow. Michael Wilk more than filled his shoes.

Anther one I grew up with. One memory of this one is more recent though. I was on my way to the beach to spend a weekend with friends and went through the car was on my way down there and right as the "ride" inside the car wash started this song came on my radio. It was kind of cool, I'm already looking forward to spending time on the beach and my trip starts off with a multi-colored soap and light show through the car wash. (Yeah, I'm easily amused)

Ok here is my Steppenwolf story.....back in the 70's a few friends had I had just finished surfing at Huntington Beach...we were driving home down Pacific Coast Highway when we saw the marquee on a place called The Golden Bear, right across the street from HB pier..it said, Steppenwolf Tonight....we pulled in and bought tickets....now this was nothing more than a glorified bar with seats around the stage like a strip bar....there was a sign on the seats that said reserved so we took the sign off and sat down...a dude came over and said :"Hey these seats are reserved" my friend said, "Yea we reserved them last week" the guy looked at us and walked away...Steppenwolf came out and played not 3 feet from us....John Kay even gave us a high five at the end of the show.

Everyone knew "The Pusher", but it received NO airplay because of the main lyrics including "G@d Damn, the Pusher". Two years later, they included it in the 'Easy Rider' soundtrack. Born to Be Wild was their Top 40 song, but real fans knew the whole album.

John Kay named the band after a book that he liked. The story as to why his mother brought him to Canada is fairly interesting - let's just say that he was born during dangerous times. Kay speaks fluent German. Other than stories about magic carpets and the kaleidoscope feel to this song that reminds me of the Hilarious House of Frightenstein - though I don't think they actually covered that one. They had Canadian content rules for radio back then so heard a lot of his songs. You've got to do Steppenwolf's Snowblind Friend ...

I'ld like to request or rather suggest a song for you to do a REACTION to: Its called Under Pressure, sung live on stage by David Bowie and Annie Lennox- the singer from the band 'Eurythmics'. It's a beautiful tribute to Freddie Mercury. Such a GREAT performance and the collaboration between the two singers is magical.

Great Song and group. Actually had the chance to see them perform live twice. Once at a small outdoor venue in the mid 70's outside of New Kensington, PA. Then I saw them at Ft. Bragg, NC when I was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division in 1978. Great time both times. Born to Be Wild and the Pusher are two more favorites of mine by them.
