Stepper Motor Basics - Another Teaching Moment | DigiKey Electronics

When adding motion elements to your electronics project, selecting the size and type of motor is often a challenging task. Stepper motors are a good choice when torque, precision and holding function are a consideration. In this video, the basics of stepper motor construction and operational theory are discussed in detail as well as how to determine wire pairs and what control devices are used to run stepper motors.

Some laser printers have high speed step motors. I found a fully adjustable driver board in an old packard bell unit that's a lot of fun to mess around with.....

How do the phases change for microstepping?

Stepper motor driver IC's will send current to each phase as sine waves to move the rotor to a position between natural steps. We may cover microstepping more in-depth in future videos
