Here i review vintage classic Sansui eight deluxe (60 watts) a very collectable receiver from 1971 .and compare and contrast with .
Sansui AU 719 (90 watts ) amplifier from 1980.
I use various songs to examine the sound differences in detail.

Kelvin. I want to thank you for steering me into a just purchased Sansui 5000 receiver. I had hoped that it would pair nicely with 2 bang & Olufsen beovox 5700 speakers I have. I paid $250 for the sansui from a tech guy. Man O man! The sound I am listening to from these is out of this world! I can stop looking for awhile. Thanks

Keep it. The 719 is one of the great Sansu amps but it's legendary big brother, the 919 was also released in 1979, so it was somewhat over-shadowed. Incredibly low distortion, huge frequency response and rapid slew rate. No colouration to the music, unlike the warm sound of earlier sansui amps. It matches well with speakers like the KEF LS50 (be warned the combo will show up any poor recordings but will glow with good recordings). Refurbished it'll probably last another 40 years or so and few new amps below a couple of grand will get near it.

Loved listing to this Kelvin, thanks. I recently picked up a lovely Cambridge Audio P50 with a T55 receiver in superb condition. Paired it with a Marantz CD player and some DM4's and it's happy days in my office right now with this setup. I do love the Sansui smooth presentation though I have to say.

Fantastic Kelvin! Found you a few weeks ago and I'm really enjoying the info and the way you present it without a snobby attitude. Great stuff! Wanted to share a few of the pieces of gear that my GF and I use regularly. The Sherwood S8910 receiver gets used the most, asking with JBL L110s as the main system. Very smooth, seems to be pretty good at most everything. Also use the Yamaha CR-1020 receiver, currently with New Large Advents in the studio. I like the Yamaha but it is more sensitive to what speakers it is paired with. Sounded too thin with Polk Monitor 10s. Just picked up a Marantz 2270 followed by a Sansui Eight. Hope to get them going soon!!

Hi Jason yeah that’s some interesting stuff you have let me know your thoughts particularly Marantz versus Sansui and perhaps the Yamaha but I think they’ll be better than the Yamaha Let me know what you think also the Sansui and the Marantz will have preamp power amp separation. I did do a video on how you connect those if you want to get really crazy you can buy a nice preamp and use the power amp of the Sansui or the Marantz because I would say the power ramps are the best bits of those receivers anyway good luck my friend

I watched every video. I’m watching them again because there aren’t any new ones. I think England may have cheaper prices on gear. Americans want top dollar for used anything. I’ve never seen anything like it. Cars, bikes, speakers, amps, CD’s, records etc.. That Sansui is huge. I want one.

Wow, great review! really insightful. I enjoyed it very much. I use Sansui AU G90X 130 watts integrated from 1984 to drive Vienna Acoustics Grand Mozart SE. It's great - smooth and detailed. Jazz and orchestras sound really fantastic. Pop stuff also. Maybe less perfect for hard rock as it simply sounds too nice and polite. Any thoughts on that specific SANSUI amp? Best regards, Nikola

Yet another video where we benefit from your intelligent interpretation of years of audio experience. Nice job K. Sansui Eight vs Eight Deluxe (or 881) would be informative. Apparently the Eight is the earliest and cap coupled and the Eight Deluxe, Seven, Six and 881 are later amp designs. Is there a Sansui integrated amp similar to the pre+amp in the Eight or the later Eight Deluxe ? With records plus streaming channels one does not always need the added utility and circuit complexity of an FM mplx tuner... and some excellant amp Techs will not work on rcvrs.

I bought a Sansui 8 in '73. It was a demonstrator. Has had a lot of rock and jazz through it. Even a demonstration from a friend during a party of how to blow out a match in front of the speakers. They didn't survive. Still use it, though all lights are out, switches and volume controls are a bit crusty. The thing's built solid. I would love to get it rebuilt. I think it would be worth it, especially after seeing a few reviews lately. Thanks for yours.

Hi Kelvin, great review, I’ve been curious about the pre 75 era Sansui sound compared to the post 75 for awhile along with the idea of having a stand alone amp or a receiver type. I originally was leaning towards the stand alone amp but living in Tokyo, a city that is prone to earthquakes and other natural disasters, the idea of having a radio not connected to the internet is something I’ve been thinking about to get emergency information if needed. The AU719 would be my go to if I were to pick up one of those black beasts. Prices here have been rising slightly but then again these pieces have been tuned and recapped and usually given a 3-6 month warranty at the shops I frequent. The prices I have been seeing for the AU719 which would be the AU 707 in Japan have been starting around the ¥700 mark and up towards the ¥900. I recently came upon an AU7500 for ¥900 that was recapped and literally blew me away. I still think it’s a little high when I could look at a 9500 starting around the same price. On the AU7500 I couldn’t put the volume past three without blowing the store out, the sound was so smooth crystal clear with good thumb playing through a pair of JBL4307. The only problem I have with the post 75 models are the plastic knobs compared to the steel knobs that came with the earlier models and they are slightly more clinical in sound not to say that is a bad thing. The question I have would be which one sounds better for jazz, maybe some Wes Montgomery or Coltrane. Would also love to also hear an actual sound test. Lastly, I’ve been told, spend the money and invest in a good set of speakers first, then you can compare any receiver or amp with those great speakers instead of the other way around. Thanks again, Keep on.

I am not sure i would pay top money for the 719 the vocal sibilance is just to big a problem for me.. the thing about what to spend your money on amp or speakers has been changing back and forth over the years . for me its all about matching .. if anything i woud say get the best amp first .

Excellent video. I just received my recapped Eight Deluxe powering some Pioneer CS-99a's. Simply blown away by the sound. I could not agree more with the deep bass without minimizing the overall sound. I compared this with my cousins Sansui G-7000. The Eight Deluxe is rich and full and the 7000 seems to differentiate better. Some songs are better on the Eight and others on the 7000. My "go to" demo is Paul Simon "Diamonds on the soles of her shoes" ..... ridiculous!

Thank you very much for this review. I enjoyed it very much. I agree with most you said. I unfortunately don't have the eight, but I have the 331, which is also regarded by its nice sound (low power, but as you say, 12 or 15 watts in the 70's are like 50 today, and I have a very sensitive speakers). I also don't have the 717 but the 217, and although I like the sound of the 217, as you say, I end up hearing more the 331 (or even the AU-101) than the 217. If I had just one amd I wouldn't mind to have just the 331 or the AU-217. I also have an AU-4900 that just was recapped and I can find more definition on the highs and a more fast bass, but essentially the same sound on the classic 331 or AU-101. I really like their sound. Pioneer sound is close too. I have a very modest 434 and a 506 that I like very much. Again, thanks for the review!

I have an Au-8500 that belonged to my father, he lost interest over time but I didn't, so when the time came for me to leave my parents' house I took it with me. For sheer listening pleasure it's still my favorite amp, among those of my small collection there are also an Au-7700 and a NAD 7020 both connected at the moment. So studio Au-8500, livingroom Au-7700, bedroom 7020.

I was wondering if you could help me make a objective comparison between the 331 and 8 deluxe. Is there a huge and significant difference on their sound, power and features? What other Sansui models should I also consider if I need to upgrade my 331. Thanks a lot!
@stereoreviewx
@stereoreviewx 3 жыл бұрын
Well as far as sound goes but not power the 331 is pretty gorgeous . . Unless you desperately need power I wouldn’t bother with any other of that range you might try the Sansui are you317 which is another one of my favourites or the a U101 which has a more delicate valve light sound . Basically you started with a good one with a 331. The eight deluxe is a beast and significantly more expensive like four or five times but at ordinary sound levels it’s not going to be superior to the 331

I've had a bunch of Sansui receivers of that era...including the Eight. They were all very good sounding, but the Deluxe is the winner. It benefits from a more modern amp section. What sets those Sansui's apart are the Hashimoto transformers. They were the gold standard and it shows. The Eight Deluxe gives my Mcintosh 4100 a run and in some ways might sound better.

"You might use the tone defeat". I will only use an amp if it has some type of bypassing the tone controls. On a decent amp you don't need to adjust tones, at a rather large sound quality price. Sometimes I will be listening to music and it just doesn't sound right and then I will realize the fault was the tone controls were on. The signal to noise ratio goes way up when the signal passes through all those clucky potentiometers and other unnecessary electronic components. I never realized how much tone controls degraded the sound quality until I got high quality speakers. If a song was recorded to have thunderous bass, then decent neutral speakers and amps will play it as recorded. I've been watching a lot of your videos and I really like your intuitive descriptions of how things sounds. I totally get it. That is how my brain works too.

It would be so helpful if you would mention your reference components used for the review. Can you also reference your comments about power ratings. I always look for the RMS rating into 8 ohms and (4 ohms to see if power doubles) . I believe that is and was the industry standard. Power ratings in peak power might be helpful to reference headroom and current delivery but the RMS standard is the recognized measurement.

I have a Sansui G-7500 from 1978 which I bought at a thrift store for $25.00. I got an estimate for $250 to fix (replace caps, diox, set DC bias). Figure for under $300 not a bad investment. the G-7500 has same power rating as the AU-719 but slightly higher THD. Believe its 0.03% versus 0.008 for the sansui I believe. Wondering how the G-7500 would stack up against the AU-719?

Have the 8 and the 8 Deluxe , look similar, but different circuitry. Both sound very good in their own ways , the 8 is more mellow , classical music and jazz sound great with a good Soundstage . The Eight Deluxe has more puncher bass , great highs and nice midrange. Does well with rock music , and jazz. The 8 is a better build in some aspects , had more of a complex power amp section , 4 adjustments for each channel .

@stereoreviewx

Well the rating on the speakers is normally the maximum power it’s kind of hard to save but if you’re interested in vintage amps I’m going to bet you all the tea in China the 30 W is all you need I have multiple amps and speakers some of them are 12 what’s they almost never I mean never have trouble driving Speakers except perhaps the Cath LS 50 which just don’t sound good or proper until they get at least 50 W

Those 70s hi-fi systems were the best in looks and most of all the sound. I know nothing on the technical side, but the bass and spacious stereo sound on them is incredible. I will be buying a new turntable soon and when hooked up to my 90s ARCAM 7 amp I find I am not impressed, I will hunt down a 70s amp.

I bought a Linn turntable for £15 second generation K9 cartridge Thorens 160 with a Shure v15 mk iv cartridge £15 a revox Tape Deck a b710 for £20 all in fine working condition. It's a pain I can't do it anymore, what about where you live? Is that how you're getting your equipment?

The 719, like the 919 was designed to have a very different sonic character to earlier sansuis. The DD/DC circuitry resulted in an incredibly clean and detailed sound, a wide frequency response, rapid slew rate and extremely low distortion. Back to back with an earlier Sansui it could sound sharp, because earlier Sansuis coloured the sound. The clarity of the 719 strips bare any deficiencies in a poor recording but feed it a great recording and it will lay it out in a very detailed soundstage. The reproduction of some (very good) recordings of female singers can be almost unbearable in their intimacy. They're both great amps. The year 1979 saw the launch of the AU-x19 series of amplifiers and marked a big change in the sonic character of Sansuis, to an uncloured and very accurate reproduction. That "warmth", the secret sauce of earlier Sansui amps/receivers, beloved by many, had gone. In its place an emphasis on uncoloured, faithful and accurate reproduction. It comes down to preference.

You had to have a degree in engineering just to power up a Sansui "Big Boy" receiver. An ad from '78 said one could pump out 400 watts. I don't remember if it was supposed to be R.M.S. or peak, though.

The earlier Sansui 717 amp which looked almost identical was actually the better piece. The 719 got caught up in the cost cutting that began the late 70s. Smaller power supply and more ICs replacing discrete components. also some cheaper parts and switches. Overall the 719 is noticeably lighter than the 717 and sounds not quite as good. A bit etched and not quite the effortless liquid sound of the 717. Mind you the crap that Sansui made later in the 80s was abysmal so the 719 is a treasure by comparison.

In my opinion The Fisher did tubes best. For solid state it's Sansui. McIntosh comes in a close second, tubes or transistors. Now, I go with Sansui. Not that hybrids are best. I love the tube sound because of the soundstage and realism. For speed, all I mean is on and off, start and stop; I go with Field Effect Transistors. In the day all these amps would have been FET, but they weren't invented yet, and tubes. After all that if you aren't running Sonus Faber's you are just fooling yourself. I care not what you spend on speakers. SF Cremonas are the best by far. 1'st generation. They had to change cause they couldn't find the same mid range driver, so that called for new tweeters. If you really want to get technical you go with Cremoras. And the best, but they are made now of unobtanium, as are the Cremozas. Every person that has a set of those will never sell. I have heard all three, but alas I was in the lottery and I lost.

Have sold a lot of things in the past i better could have keep. Like a Philips Black Tulip set. I bought this Sansui because i love the Sansui sound and want a perfect one to keep forever. Got it for €750 wich is a lot of money but it's restored and modified by a known Sansui expert. I'm collecting also test gear and all the things i need to restore things myself. Thats not easy but i go give it a try with some small amps soon. A 40 year old amp can sound good but if you recap it, it can really open up. I will let you know my thoughts on that new Sansui.
