STERILIZE YOUR SOIL MIX: HERE'S WHY | Q&A | Soil mix for cacti & succulents

A long time ago we’ve posted a video on how to make a soil mixture for cacti and other succulents by yourself, the link to it is in the description below. Since then we have received a lot of interesting comments, some of them were positive, and some of them - negative! Today we will talk about most of them!
So, the first question is - what is turf ground or turf soil?
Turf soil is the upper layer of meadow soil, which is formed by plant residues and silt alluvial deposits. It has a high moisture capacity, finely clotted structure and a complete set of trace elements. The soil is common in the steppe zone of Europe.
The next comment was about sterilizing the soil mixture.
We think, that it is a necessary procedure. Because of this, all pathogens are destroyed. As a side effect, beneficial microorganisms also die - this is not critical. After you plant a succulent in such a mixture, the microorganisms that are on the roots will quickly multiply and fill the whole soil mixture.
There were also comments about soil acidity.
Some people think, that we use too acidic mixture. And that is not actually right! The acidity of our mix is in the acceptable range of acidity for most succulents. In our case, the soil is prepared at the lowest acceptable level of acidity because for irrigation we use water that has an alkaline reaction.
Succulents can be grown both in mono-material (expanded clay, glass, sand, mineral wool, coconut fiber, rice husk, bark, walnut shells or pure chernozem), and in soil mixtures made according to various recipes. The necessary minimum knowledge about your plant, which is necessary in order to make a choice:
the permissible range of acidity of the soil mixture;
volume of the root system;
individual intolerance - for example: lime or organics;
plant growth rate;
the frequency of watering and the ratio of the roots of the plant to a particular duration of soil moisture.
Using our soil mixture, more than 350 species of cacti and other succulents are grown. Most cacti from the moment of sowing already bloom in the third year. This is a fact on the basis of which we can argue that such a composition of the soil mixture is suitable for most types of cacti in our region! Of course, you can always find an exception, in some regions cacti will grow in the sand, and in some they will die in the same sand. Always remember the conditions for plant care in your area!
