checked out these microphones at a local guitar center a while ago; The 159 caught my ear; I thought i sounded the best through it, however that mic station was fucking amateuristic at best. everyone had the low/highpass filter on and a -10db switch activated while it was next guitar section which had 5 different people playing pretty damn loudly. if you are going to have a mic showcase have it it a muted isolated room instead of next to the guitar section.

Bigtasty Ben I just left GC and tested out the 159. As far as I can tell, it’s fantastic for voice over as well. Definitely my favorite out of the ones that were available to try. But yeah, the kid playing Smells Like Teen Spirit over and over again was particularly annoying coming through the headphones.

I bought an ST55 back in the day before I knew what I was doing and to this day...I plan on getting it modded as it collects dust. It is the most sterile and boring mic I have every used. Is it clear and transparent? Yes. Could it be great on instruments? Sure....I've heard it used on acoustic guitar and was impressed, but it is so boring and sterile and verges on being too thin for vocals.

that's for the 159 and 169. I just ordered the 169 since its the only tube mic on the market under $1000 and they are worth the money if your looking for a good vocal mic go for the sterling 169 multi pattern tube condenser mic. if you want I will post a review of it since I mainly record vocals. I make hip hop so my sound is fairly aggressive and would give you a good idea of what it sounds like
