Like so many other skilled tradesmen/company owner-operators, you do an INCREDIBLE amount of in-house repairs ! I fully understand that to run trucks and or equipment off to a garage is both expensive and ties up equipment sitting at a shop yard waiting to be worked on, instead of you getting it done and said equipment working FOR you. Wow, makes for a long day ! Great videos, very interesting !

Something I learned about studding and bolting during my career in the Navy. A little never-seize on those bolt threads will help you the next time you need to remove them. Works even better on hot end exhaust bolting. Just an old man thinking out loud lol. I enjoyed your videos. Thank you for sharing.

The holes in the lock washer are off center. If you can't get them to line up where you want them. Flip the washer over and the holes will be half off, splitting the distance to the next hole. Always go to the next looser hole, never the next tighter hole. Better a hair loose than a hair tight. More so on lighter axles. CHEERS

The proper way to adjust that type of wheel bearing is to seat the bearing as you showed, then back off the nut 1 turn then torque to 50 Ft# and back off 1/4 turn. Install dowel washer and lock nut . Torque lock nut 300-400 FT#. This procedure can be found on the internet by bearing and hub manufactures. It is the only method that will hold up in court if there is a accident!

I agree with Darren Steele, anytime I replaced bearings or pulled the rotors off any of my vehicles, when reinstalling bearings, I always repacked the new bearings with grease. Here, he just placed the bearings in the drum and then the seal. No good. Bearings won't last long.

The one with the hub cover holding the hub and how you used diesel to lube and clean the bearing. Hey Madman. Next time you weld a nut to the copper try welding a thick washer to it first then weld the nut to the washer. Awesome video bro!!! 🇺🇸

You never use diesel fuel to lubricate the spindle surface for the seal to go back on. It can swell the rubber in the seal and weaken it causing possible leaks in the future shortening its life.

I’ve broken driver’s side wheel studs on a ‘63 Pontiac Bonneville Ambulance... I had to replace both driver’s side tires when the old ones quit holding air while it was on my trailer... I knew about left-handed studs, however the front ones were regular, and I didn’t bother to check the rear ones... so I proceeded to snap two of the remaining 4 studs right off... I replaced those with regular studs to match the front ones. I wonder why there was already one that was broken...

I have never scene the copper tube trick, I will be trying that one thanks for sharing. As long at the rear axle is full, pull the truck into a spot where that wheel is lower and the lube will flow out to the bearings, I always added some to the hub before installing the outer bearing to be on the safe side. I see someone else left the correct procedure on tightening the bearing nuts. One thing to keep in mind is the fact that there is a bit of play in the bearing nut on the threads, so if the inner bearing is set so there is no free play in the bearings, when the outer nut is tightened it will push the inner nut over a few thousands and the bearings will be running to tight. They will be preloaded, just as if the truck had a load on it when empty. As far as easy outs go never use them, because when you brake one off then you are really screwed. Yes I clicked the like button.

Great video. I saw on another U-tube channel where they placed a flat washer under the nut to be welded, helps to keep the weld inside the nut and not spread out. I noticed you had a one nut with a built in washer (flange nut) so that might even be better. Haven't tried this but just an FYI. Again very good video. Stanley

That was amazing and a great video in every way. Shows how it goes in real life. Those welds almost worked but I was betting a good machine shop would get it and they did. Had to laugh over the "shiny new on this old truck" comment! I know you already answered this about the bearing lubrication from the gear oil, but I always thought they should be packed with grease first. No?
@DIRT-BOSS
@DIRT-BOSS 5 жыл бұрын
Dale no Grease strictly 80/90 gear oil grease would stop the flow of the oil. Other scenarios where there's not an oil bath then yes you do pack them with grease but these trucks have oil baths on all axles including front. I'm sure in the future I'll have video footage of me welding Frozen studs out of something I've done it multiple times! Have a great Sunday! 🌞

My old truck takes grease in the steer axle bearings only, never seen a modern (post 1950’s) drive axle on a truck that uses grease, always gear oil. Easy way to tell on front is if you have solid steel bearing caps it takes grease, if they’re the see through type with a fill plug they take gear oil.

Interesting repair why didnt you pack the bearings with grease runing beatings without packing them is asking for trouble the bearings can get very hot by the time the diff oil gets to them so safest way is use some grease saves any stress of failed bearings happening..😀😀😀 Be careful like you learned leave the air gun on the bench when tightening somethings lol 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣slow an steady wins the race well done you checked wheel stud tension after using the air gun seen many wheels fall off from lazy air gun users 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

Good points but I disagree on the packing with Grease .. as soon as you take the truck off the Jack oil is halfway up on that bearing.. if you pack grease in there you starve the bearing from oil. Thanks for your imput!

@@DIRT-BOSS Whatever works for you is fine like I said seen others do it your way and destroy things. We all do things different grease is cheap. What realy makes it worse is the camber on the road oil tends to run to the lowest side leaving the other side dry if it hasnt been on level surface long enough after the repair to allow the oil to work its way through to the bearings gear oil travels slow. Be safe keep up the good work 😀😀😀😀🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺😀😀😀

@@DIRT-BOSS absolutely. The grease displaces the area oil would go. Put the hub on, pre fill the cavity, put the outer bearing on. I top the diff oil off and then jack up the opposing side so oil will fill that hub up for sure. You're doing fine.

@@DIRT-BOSS I would say ditch the diesel. It's a good cleaner, not so good as a pre lube on wheel bearings and the seal. It'll be displaced and ultimately not make a difference. But ya know, KZbin gotta tell what I think 😉. Nice to see an owner working on his own equipment and having good results. Keep up the good work.

next time just jack up the opposite side a few inches and leave it for a few minutes... that'll fill the hub with fluid so you don't have a dry start
