Sterling StingRay short scale bass review

I own 3 of these bass’s, one white, one blue and one I had custom painted as flat black, I also added custom pick guards on all my Stingrays. ALL of my Sterling Short Scale Stingrays are set up as BEAD bass’s with my low B string being a 125 gauge, DR Super Bright Stainless Steel strings which give me that super bright piano string sound that I personally love. I’m a lifelong pro player and use my Stingrays for all my gigs now while my all P-Bass’s are collecting lots of dust. The playability of these short scale bass’s is unbelievably comfortable, the lighter weight and the reach ability on the neck is definitely a huge plus. And my Stingrays sound awesome going thru my Hartke amps and cabs. Cheers, Davyo

That's awesome, and great to know! I was thinking about getting one and setting it up for BEAD, it's such a useful tuning. I've never been a big fan of 5 strings, though have no issue with BEADGC six strings. Thanks for sharing!

I have the White one, and I absolutely love it. I'm a guitarist, and it has exceeded my expectations. It's on par with my Suhr Custom SSS and my Taylor 414ce-R. I'm enjoying playing Bass more then I though I would. oNe LovE from NYC

these sounds fantastic.. and i would take out that capacitor that "engage" that boost, its a small detail but i'd bog me knowing that i'm not at 100% volume XD

Nice video, thank you Pete! Putting tone aside, what are your thoughts on the overall build quality of the Sterling short scale vs the Sire U5? There is quite a difference in price but the Sire's are so visually stunning. Thanks!

I absolutely love my Sire U5, and I've played a couple of others, but they just didn't impress me quite as much. One had a bit of a neck dive and the other was the blue finish that felt more like a toy (personal opinion). I've played four of the Sterlings, two of them were great and two of them had major fret sprout. I don't know if it was just a winter in Canada thing, but it was worth noting for sure. I own the U5, but I've never pulled the trigger on the Sterling. If I came across one that played as nicely as the first one I played, it might come home with me to stay. There were no issues with the electronics, body finish or anything like that with the Sterlings, it was just the fret sprout.

I currently have a Sterling Ray24 that I quite like. Do you think it would be worth it to get this short scale along with that? I like the growl that stingrays produce. Getting a short scale version that is passive should be quite different when it comes to the way it feels when playing and the sounds it can produce, while still keeping that signature stingray sound of course. What would be your opinion/view on this?

Well, I guess the question is if you actually need another bass? If you decide that you do, going with something that has the feel that you know and like but giving you a different set of options could be a good pick. It's not like you're getting a second Ray24 in a different finish. I do like these basses, and I'm very partial to short scales, so really it comes down to what you need.

Thanks for the review! i have one to.i find that when switching between the 3 modes the most right one is the loudest compared to the other 2.is this normal? The most left is series mode, the middle is songle coil and the most right is series mode right?

Thanks for watching! Generally speaking, series will be louder and parallel will be cleaner.

You should have played the same thing on both basses to give a true comparison.

I wasn't really trying to compare them, I was going with the sound being the same on both instruments, basically treating them as one instrument. The real difference between the two was just the colour.
