I have hearing loss and I just bought the Littmann Cardiology IV. It's amazing. I can hear everything. It does have a little weight to it, but that doesn't bother me. I can hear noise around me, but I just push in the bell, and I'm able to hear what I'm looking for. I also should point out that I don't work in a busy E.D. Great video!

I don't know why but I enjoy the weight of master cardiology! I've tried a few different ones but I find myself going back to the master cardiology, it looks serious and you definitely know it's around your neck, I've lost a few of the cheap light weight ones before. The secret to keeping the heavy ones is to get the slightly longer tubes and it balances itself and sits pretty around the neck all day!

I recently bought the MDF Instruments MD ONE stethoscope. No complains at all. It's cheaper than Litmann's and has the same hearing quality, even on very noisy ambients (trust me, we have quite noisy ambients on brazilian infirmays hahah)

The current problem I have with my Littmann Cardiology II is the angle of the earpiece in my ear. I find that I can't take a manual blood pressure unless my neck if flexed forward. This a problem, because I can't read the gauge on the wall with my head in that position. I would like to be able to adjust the metal portion of the earpiece to fit my ears better.

I was (and hope to be again) an oncology staff nurse. I tried the cardiologist 3 but after a week I gave up on it and went to the Classic SE just due to the weight. This might be heresy, but I found lung sounds to be more important than heart sounds usually for my cancer patients. So, if you’re oncology, (but not oncologist!) then I’d optimize based on weight & lung sounds. Also - black. Hmmm. I’ve had a couple of patients get scared of old black stethoscope. I bought a non-threatening teal (!) and never had a patent feel threatened by stethoscope again. This may be why pediatric nurses generally don’t have black stethoscopes.

Also, I found that a doctor’s stethoscope generally didn’t matter as they were forever borrowing mine!

Not bad advice. My professor, who was President of the AHA, used an inexpensive light weight Littmann. Sir Wm. Osler used a Ford-Bowles or Rieger-Bowles. Both can be had at very low prices but require, as you indicated, low ambient noise. The most important things about a stethoscope are the air tightness of the valve and complete occlusion of the ext. auditory canals by the ear pieces. Beyond those things, a trained brain is needed.

I’ve been an STNA for a few yrs & was recently doing Qshift vitals at a new facility on a unit I’d never worked... had one that I couldn’t bring cart in room & I looked at the other STNA & asked her to get the vitals on that resident cause I can’t do a manual bp, & she basically laughed at me, little did she know I’ve had a hearing loss since I was a child, & not only that I’ve never had to check a bp manually cause the nurses checked vitals at the facility I worked at for yrs, & I was never required to learn nor was I taught!! Kinda insulted by the way she acted, but oh well!

have you ever used the CMS-M by Contec? It is a combination stethoscope and has a visual ecg screen so you can visualize the tracing as you listen. It have a freeze screen component as well as O2 sat monitor as well. It can be connected to your computer for transfer and diagnosis as well as a large storage ability to use to compare with past events. Really great in a ICU or ER. Also, there is a great NICU Littman that comes with two different sizes of heads...one for Normal Neonatal use as well as a very small bell that is used for micro premie's. It has a very long tube to allow less back strain on me when caring for a little one in a isolette. Check them out. I am sure you would like them. I have had so many people see mine, and ask for them. The CMS-M is only available on line from the Contec co. but very nice. Be especially sure you mark them with your name. They tend to go walking all over the hospital if you don't.

Hey Dr. Oller- I'm purchasing my first stethoscope for med school this year. Have you heard anything about the Cardiology IV? It was released earlier this year and I'm torn between the III and the IV. They are both almost the same price...I prefer the "look" of the III, but I know I should be looking for quality first.

I'm about to start medical school in August (at UPR-RCM!) and I'm going to purchase my first stethoscope very soon so this was perfect timing. What do you recommend for a medical student just starting out? Other students have recommended the Cardiology III but it's a bit expensive for me (since I'll be paying for the stethoscope myself). You think the Classic III is good enough for a student who is just starting out?
@franciscobarraza80957 жыл бұрын
cristy7pr I'm at my 5 th year of medschool (not USA) BD I can tell you as long that looks as a toy it doesn't matter that much, when I started I had 1 that was kinda toyish but was comfortable to use and it worked less than aceptable then I lost it by my 2 year and change to a really crappy one and you can tell the difference of how much noice you can hear with it around in ER also uncomfortable now I have a cardiology III and sounds good and confortable I would recommend you to buy atleast a classic most can do fine with it or unless you can't hear well a cardiology can help you more than a classic, and if you are really careful about stuff buy the cardiology almost all the Dr I have met have only buy a stethoscope once or twice in their life (stolen doesn't count) (stop working or broken does)

When did doctors start wearing their stethoscopes draped around their necks as opposed to just pulling the earpieces down and having the metal tubes around their necks?

I am retired now (qualified 1976). I found my Littman was too tight for comfort around my neck and my old Sprague-Bowles (which I ended up using most of the time) would not stay in place, so I carried it either in my white coat pocket (white coats have been banned in the UK for some years now) or in my medical bag. At medical school the only people I saw wearing stethoscopes over their shoulders were two elderly professors. Many years later I noticed all the cool kids were wearing them like that: I suspect the soap opera "ER" had a lot to do with it.

I go with the $5.88 ones with free shipping on ebay because they were made in China and China is great for ripping off Littman designs. Without paying for workman's compensation and pulling additional funds for Healthcare, dental etc and I can buy a few more if I lose it. Go with the cheap one

if your taking a blood pressure on a patient whom has seizure. You have three minutes to get the vital signs. I had hoped they would develop something to get both heart sounds. Instead of one. Now, a days there teaching you to do the math in your head under one minute to get all three at the same time.

Wrong, The EKO is made by EKO, They use tubing and bell made by MDF (this is what they told me in a recent email). They are a SF based company that only makes the EKO amplifier. you can put it is any stethoscope and it comes with adapters for different size tubing.
