National Geographic Explorer and conservationist Steve Boyes' water supply discoveries signal new hope for Africa’s dry land.
Findings from Boyes’ latest string of expeditions near the source of the Okavango Delta in the Angolan Highlands confirm new information about Africa's natural water towers. For instance, the source of Africa’s second largest river by volume, the Cassai, a tributary of the Congo, is the Munhango River in the Angolan Highlands, and the source of the Zambezi River isn’t in Zambia, the country named after the river.
Since 2015, Boyes has led the National Geographic Okavango Wilderness Project in surveying all major rivers of the region. The multi-year project has explored 17 major rivers and channels covering a total of over 7,456 miles (12,000 kilometers), working in partnership with local communities, NGOs, and the governments of Angola, Namibia, and Botswana. The team has navigated the region by foot, mountain bike, car, and dug-out mokoro (canoe) in an effort to secure permanent, sustainable protection of the greater Okavango Basin.
