Long ago I was the performer inside a radio station mascot called Cookie Bear who was a 7ft tall panda with a top hat and a bow tie. On several occasions I had to play soccer inside that fully enclosed funny fur and foam spacesuit. On one occasion one of the professional players kicked the ball at me so hard that I fell backwards trying to keep Cookie Bear’s head from flying off. Luckily the neck cowling was Velcroed to the inside of the head and kept it attached, but from the outside I am quite sure it looked like Cookie Bears neck snapped as the hit tore loose the strap under my chin and the head (which was huge) was certainly lolling around for a few seconds until I recovered and got the inner control cap seated back on my head. The incident cracked Cookie Bears nose and there was little interest in repairing it. So that ended up being the beginning of the end of him. It is an incredibly taxing job and I have never ending empathy for people working as mascots… even minions. 😉😀

One summer in high school, I worked behind the scenes in the costume dry-cleaning department at King's Dominion. They were just regular clothes that we took in, cleaned and gave back, but some of the stories we heard at the end of the day were . . . let's say we were like surrogate therapists.

It must be a hard gig. Our Rotary club built a school, and during the turnover to the DepEd they hired Jollibee to come dance around and give out food to the kids. Jollibee is a giant bee mascot. In the back room, this kid in his early 20s took off the costume head and looked like he melted into the floor. We gave him a huge tip! 😎

It can’t be that difficult to install powered fans in the minion suits.

It is actually kinda difficult. Your fan has to be driven by a motor. When the motor runs, it gets hot. So now you've got a heat source in the suit. Of course you want to mount it outside the suit, but you can't because then it's visible and spoils the appearance. So you have to have invisible venting somehow, maybe driven by yet another fan. It's not that simple, really.

I wore a large, comical cat costume with a large head. Yes. There was a fan inside but it just moved hot air around inside the head. The longer it's worn, the hotter it gets. You end up wearing a sauna suit. It can be gross and uncomfortable.
