A gorgeous and heart-tugging song from Guy Clark, who was one of Steve's early mentors. Most of that Austin group is gone now, except Steve and Rodney Crowell, and the ageless Willie. RIP, Blaze, Townes, Guy, Susanna, Jerry Jeff, Skinny Dennis

Just heard, this morning, we lost a great outlaw... Jerry Jeff Walker passed away, Friday night, from the past years battle with cancer. Another legend gone. I am beyond saddened, grieving for a man I never met, but whose presence and impact on this music-living gal's heart was huge. Thank you, Steve, for sharing this poignant ode to a true 'outlaw country' soul... REST IN PEACE, Jerry Jeff. Godspeed.

First time I saw You in concert was in Tucson, right after 9/11. I figured that You didn't like flight jackets with Air Force patches. Got to introduce my close friends to Your music when I got back to Grand Junction, Colorado and bought them tickets to enjoy Your performances when You got through this valley. Your music, and Your Mentors' way, have influenced mine. Thanks for humbling me at the Rialto Theater in Tucson, right after 9/11. I thought that I was Billy Baddass wearing my flight jacket, but You looked right at me and said, "There are going to be some heroes in this Country, and not all of them will be wearing uniforms ". "

Yeah Martin, you’re right. My older sister and I were just talking this morning, about this song. And she said it was written by Guy Clarke. Jerry Jeff, made it famous. Those were the days of the Cosmic Cowboys, as they called them back then.

Guy's and this version are Texas Outlaw Country as they should be, Jerry Jeff'a version was as LA Country Singer/Songwriter Scene as you would ever find. I love both versions for what each is saying. Guy's was remorseful and defiant and hopeful. Jerry Jeff's was up yours and I am leaving this hellhole for somewhere better.

The vocal mic is the sE Gemini II which is a tube mic (it has its own power supply). The acoustic guitar mic is the Shure sm81, which is phantom powered, yes. Both mics are plugged into a Rupert Neve Designs 5024 and then into Pro Tools. Thanks for listening!
