Love Steve, lovely chap and mega drummer...... possibly thanks to Robbie McIntosh, a spectacular drummer and THE funniest bloke i have ever known. Steve would go to the Piper club in Rome as a youngster and literally study Robbie's techniques EVERY time he played there. Later he replaced Robbie in every band he left right up to the AWB after dear Robbie's very untimely death, but he certainly left his mark. Rip.👍🇬🇧

It takes years for some and less years for others to fathom what he is doing here. This is quite simply insane and there are not many on this planet who can play this. The feel of Ferrone's groove here is INSANE. This is a feel that Jeff P, Vinnie, Gadd and others can not deliver (could for Jeff's sake) and that is not because they were not monsters but the placement of 2 og 4, the rocking motion, the INSANE tightness and staying right there on the beat at the same place doing fills and build-ups are just... well... try to record yourselves to a click or whatever and play this. Pay attention to volume of EACH beat - snare, hihat, bassdrum - I mean. This Is It. This beat is INSANE. INSANE. No one has the 2 and 4 of Ferrone. It is laid back and yet DEMANDING, DICTATING and yet it makes you feel so GOOOOOD! OH MAN! OH MAN!

@@HolyRollerTV Groove for old people? It’s a groove...does that mean all the grooves of Bonham are for old people because those grooves were made well over 40 years ago? Drums are timeless. Also, post a link of your drumming so we can compare.
@drummer783 жыл бұрын
@@HolyRollerTV It’s not supposed to be all straight ahead swing drums like it was in 1950. The project Neil Peart and Cathy Rich envisioned was drummers like Ferrone and others would bring what made their name and put them into these old Buddy Rich Band big band charts. Plus, Ferrone is one of the most groove based drummers of his time. There was a reason he was hired by everyone from Chic, Duran Duran, SNL, Eric Clapton, Tom Petty, etc. Come on dude, this notion that Steve Ferrone can’t swing drums really isn’t the hill you are going to die on...is it?
@drummer783 жыл бұрын
@@HolyRollerTV Oof...seriously. What Ferrone is doing is a chart based on a 70’s funk tune arranged for a big band and you are saying it’s stiff? 70’s R&B was his wheelhouse. Seriously post up your playing. Gadd and Chambers would never say the horseshit you are spewing to one of their peers.

I'm not a drummer but can anyone tell me what that playing style is? I am speaking of how he holds his stick with the left one bent and the right straight on.
@unklemisha10 жыл бұрын
it's not really a style, it's just a way to hold a stick - a grip, that's how drummers call it. this particular grip is called traditional grip
@teepriest10 жыл бұрын
I think comes from the old military grip.
@unklemisha10 жыл бұрын
teepriest exactly
@jjsiegal110 жыл бұрын
unklemoses EXACTLY....the grip is called Traditional. It was and is used as a technique with a titled snare drum. It allowed the player different variations and technique and sounds out of the snare. There is no right way or wrong way to hold your sticks. Many of the greats used both TRADITIONAL AND MATCHED GRIP.
@godofthunder244 жыл бұрын
Marching drums were typically suspended and angled with a slope going from left to right as the drummer sees it. There's no way you can get the left hand to play the variety of notes and dynamics required if you play matched grip.

Sorry, but what Matteo said is not an opinion. Sure, any drummer can 'play' this tune, but to be able to *really* play it w/ the amount of soul as in this video, you have to not only know how to play the drums, but also feel them.
