Steve Gadd '50 WAYS TO LEAVE YOUR LOVER' Drum Groove

RECOMMENDED* Steve Gadd's drum beat on Paul Simon's '50 Ways To Leave Your Lover'.
Please watch the entire video as I break the groove down into parts and then put it all back together.
*I demonstrate this groove stating on the downbeat of 1. In some other demonstrations, including Gadd himself, he'll put the 4 stroke double roll at the head, but it is a count-in (on the 'and' of the preceding 4). For this video I treat the 4 stroke as the end of the lick as technically, it is.

i think when Steve played it was more like a instant feel and then the rest is as they say history ,by the other words it was just a groove came to his mind and being Steve gadd ,it added another page of art of drumming with groove , taste and meaning

I have. I'm trying to teach simply the groove pattern, not the song itself or in order. When I do start the groove in my demonstration I'm not playing the lead in to count 1 as the song starts on the recording.

Lol, one of the first grooves I ever played when I started playing the drums. I did not have a video so I played it quite differently but the end result was quite the same. I haven't played the drums since 1990 but I think you explain it just about perfectly.

It's weird----my favorite music is P.Funk and other assorted R&B-----everything from blues, to Motown, to Stax, to George Clinton's myriad of artists and albums----a catalog the size of an encyclopedia. My son? Since he was 6 years old (about two years ago), he's been a fan of the Steve Miller Band. I think he heard some of their music on an oldies station I listen to when we travel to our weekend place.

I think the part you are trying to deduce in 6:25 is wrong. By a simple detail: the double note with a single hand inst the first, but the second one. So i suggest you to try doing L RR L R. With the first note higher than the following. Now, i wouldnt have been able to deduce the rest of the song, so i really appreciate this video. Great job, man. Cheers from Chile.

I disagree: if you listen to Gadd's playing, you'll notice that the double stroke does occur on the first partial. I play it RR L R L, but if you think about where your hands have to go, LL R L R makes a lot of sense!

Yeah, also the Hihat doesn't stop, it goes right through this part, most guys don't seem to get that...... It's probably overlooked coz it's an off beat and very few can play this while keeping the Hihat going on the off beat. I've yet t see anyone do it properly.

Before I even came down to the comment section, I was thinking the exact same thing. Steve plays much lighter with much more finesse. I also noticed that Steve uses the big end of the stick on the hi hat and it's still much lighter. Not many people can feel the groove like Steve can. lol

Not only that but every single tutorial I've watched on this, gets it - almost..... Tjey especially miss the fact that that it starts with a five stroke roll, the second one is an open 5 stroke roll. None of them get it. I've done a cover on it recently, but it's also not good, I need to redo it soon. I don't use sticks on the Hihat at all - I think that's what frightens most guys - keeping the Hihat going throughout (which is an off beat)
