In 1978 I went to see Steve Martins' Wild & Crazy Guy tour in Dallas. Steve Goodman came out as the unannounced warm up act. I had seen a few shows on PBS with Goodman, and was very pleasantly surprised to see Him. I felt like I was the only one there who knew who he was. Everyone was there to see crazy Steve Martin, not some unknown singer, and yet within a few songs His incredible charismatic stage presence had them in the palm of His hand. It was very impressive, and He did a very entertaining 30 min set. I'll never forget it, He made such a impact in His too short life. A few years later Steve Martin came on the Johnny Carson show and mentioned that He was doing a fund raising show to benefit Goodmans' wife and kids. I didn't know He was sick, or that He died. It was a shocking blow to hear. You feel so robbed when someone could have had a long career is abruptly gone. So sad. At least His music remains.

This man's story is... amazing. Hey, guys, he was suffering from leukaemia here, although he's shaking like an American version of Cat Stevens... he had always had suffered from leaukaemia, since his late teens... and he would suffer from leukaemia until his very last day in 1984... and I wonder how he made it. Where he found all this energy. I know many have said he used to live every day as if it were his last, and I know we all live by what life gives us and try to make the best of it, even if it's the toughest thing ever, it's just survival... aye, but I sure wouldn't 'survive' like this... 'surviving' to me is just letting go and wake up yet another day, nothing more than that, no joy, no happiness... this man wasn't just surviving, he was loving what he was doing.

@James Brian I like a wide range of music indeed. I’m not keen on so called music where you can’t tell what they are singing. Anything from the thirties up to the seventies. Plus all sorts of genres: ‘world’; Classical; New Age,” Spiritual in fact anything that is good and reaches the soul or at least a foot tapping rhythm. Example for me with my last 2 music downloads is 2 tracks from the Netflix soundtrack of “Live up to Your Name”. ‘Always’ by Hyolyn and the theme tune song ‘Here I am’ by Min Kyung Hoon. One a ballad and the other a foot stomping style. Big wide taste for this ‘oldie’.

Never knew Steve Goodman wrote Banana Republics, it’s such a Jimmy Buffett kind of song, but it proves how good of a song writer Steve was. I do really love Jimmy’s recoding though

I wonder if Steve Goodman in the middle of a performance ever forgot he was at work. He had so much fun. Always smiling and excited.

Saw Steve with John Prine in Houston in a little downtown bar in 72... Prob'ly a hundred people there... He played first and, toward the end of his set, he just couldn't revel enough great things about John Prine who, was the main billing for that little acoustic show... Empty theater type stage with a wooden floor, large pull together curtains either side, just one guy, one mic on a stand, one wooden bar stool (which, he never used) with his small amp about 20 feet back... Steve had the whole place completely taken with every song and, laughed like crazy at his own funny lyrics and lines right along with everybody there... Place was raucous as he was... When he was done, he quickly intro'd John Prine and, left the stage... Prine staggers out looking pretty tipsy already, guit swung behind his back, dragging another old wooden bar with one hand, and a six pack of bud in the other... He played a short set because after every song, he pulled off a bud from the ring, chugged it and, started a new song... Time the six pack was done, so was he... He barely got off the stage, falling off his stool several times, then somehow had enough brain left to make something like a "I gotta go, now" adieu and, staggered, mostly upright off stage... Crowd all but, went silent and, chattered amongst itself like, "what the hell just happened here?" Prine obviously never returned and, I remember thinking how everyone thought they got ripped off for the price of the ticket (about $5 bucks back then) were it not for Steve Goodman... I went out and bought all Steve's albums and, have loved his music ever since... As to Prine, went to see him one more time at the Riverfest in Little Rock early 2000's... It rained the afternoon he was to play, and even though it was an outdoor stage, it was roofed with an open front... Every other band played that afternoon, but Prine never showed up... So much for seeing Prine again... I've always liked his music and, think he's a great writer but, I think if anyone misses being around Steve Goodman more than anyone; it'd be John Prine...

This anecdote was interesting to read, but I have seen quite a few John Prine shows. Him being drunk/not showing up is definitely not a rule. I think we can agree that Steve Goodman was an incredible talent and JP probably misses being around him more than anyone.
