The black smoke from Steve Grissom's 1997 Atlanta crash was visible from across the race track. Hearts sank, because no one could possibly survive an accident so terrifying.
Could they?
This is Steve Grissom's story.

It was the last race on the original 1.522-mile AMS layout, before they reconfigured it for the first time -- making it into the 1.54-mile configuration that ran from the fall of 1997 until the early part of 2021. What I remember most about that race was how the wrecks got more and more severe throughout the race...topped off by Steve Grissom's crash, which brought out the red flag, because his car knocked down part of that inside wall. And the thing is, I don't even remember who actually won the race.

The comments are priceless. Robby, Jimmy, Mike. Glad their still here. Steve's smile throughout is pretty cool for how serious that slam was.

Skinner was a decent driver. He just wasn’t good enough for the cup series. That’s all of the guys in the story. I know Spencer and Gordon won races, but they just weren’t top 10 drivers. Grissom did very little in the cup series, but he also never had a quality ride.

Skinner could drive, but he was too aggressive and put himself in bad situations all too often.
