Some people were born to play the saxophone. Steve was one of those people. Even Joe Viola said that……

I was there on another of the nights and Steve did Four yet again, this time he had piano lay out while proceeding to go beast with Ray Drummond.......I hadn't heard anything like that EVER (with the exception of Sonny Rollins). Steve had it ALL, with the exception of a good manager & the willingness to nod/wink in the face of bullshit.

I always found it strange how Steve never had a website or internet presence, even just to provide his fans with a calandar of his gigs or studio releases. He was a truly humble legend I guess.

Absolutely incredible saxophone playing from an underrated master of his instrument. Thank you for posting this!! I was a friend of bassist David Eubanks and did some gigs with him in New Jersey during his brief tenure with Dexter Gordon's quartet. What a loss, to have passed away suddenly at just 26 years young.

Steve Grossman was so special. My favorite recording is mid 90s live trio in Italy called Bouncing With Mr. A.T.

One of the most natural and gifted improvisors from the great Jewish Post-Trane Tenor School of New York. Absolutely amazing. It has a natural flow to it, not sounding like he memorized devices, but he had a grasp of the vast jazz language and he could HEAR. Amazing, how he could start with his motifs drawn from the original recordings, then build more and more with his combination of the language. Thanks for posting this.

Today the PC woke progressives would be refer to as “Jewish appropriation of African American culture,” which is sad, but of course these guys were just gifted and humble students on the cosmic energy pathway the prophet John Coltrane created and gifted with love in his heart to all humanity.

I think Grossman made a smart decision to play “groovy” for the people after his move to Europe. It kept him working and, of course, he played so brilliantly. Keep the bootlegs coming.
