Steve is a very fair-minded individual. His perspectives are balanced and well thought out. He’s never overly critical about something that it turn people away but yet he’s sharp enough to give us clear perspectives about things in audio that are important. Words of wisdom. It's all about the music. I always think about my general electric portable turntable with fold out speakers when i first started really listening and collecting jazz records in my teens in the late fifties and early sixties. The joy of listening to the music! Whenever i find myself getting caught up in pressings, originals, equipment etc. i take a step back and recall those first experiences. This is my third and last collection as i had to sell the first two plus my beloved system when i hit financial difficulties in the late nineties ( oracle, audio research, vandersteen, smeV etc.). I can appreciate all these experiences because the music will always be there if iam. Great interview and insights!! Thank you.

Steve, the SME 309 is totally right! I've had one for 20 happy years! It holds the setting for a cartridge forever (unless one changes the cartridge). One is s-u-r-e the cartridge is working optimally. One can add the optional fluid damper for needy cartridges. The signal conductivity to the preamp is excellent (regardless of Mikey's note about multiple connections along the path). The SME 309 is un-substitutable! Cartridges love it! Owners love it!

Rudy Van Gelder was the only engineer in the pre-1970 period who really worked to get the mastering perfect. He was the only end-to-end engineer at the time, and cultivated a distinct type of sound. Musicians who liked his sound recorded at his studio, knowing what they would get. Among the most famous dissenters was Charles Mingus, who couldn't stand Van Gelder's sound.
@williamnow1465 жыл бұрын
I agree with you about RVG. He put out the most consistently good recordings of anyone. Sometimes I get a little annoyed at some of his techniques (piano recording) but overall he is hard to beat. I always liked Mingus songs and arrangements but his final product was always way too “dry” for me. He always hated Rudy’ use of reverb but Rudy recordings sound so much better to my ears.

Def right about the mastering process, the artist involvement etc. That said it doesn’t change the fact that all pressings are not created equal. Some just sound better than others. The question is should you let that consume you or not. Also it can not be denied that there is a collectible aspect to records, some buy and sell almost daily. If you find a cleaner copy and you go to sell your old copy, a nice or original pressing will yield a better return of your money. Then you get into the life of the record and the mojo associated, the cool factor if you will. New artist, I buy new records. Everyone else gets the cleanest and most readily available (to me) copy I can afford or find.

Love the interview. On physical media: Completely agree. Having access to so much music so easily is actually detrimental to engaging with the music, IMHO. I know I am sounding like an old fart, but I think this is true across the board - ease of access means we don’t put effort into getting something and thus we don’t engage with it. This must be a known phenomenon and I should learn more about it.

I used to tape music off of the radio and that music was some of the titles I cherished most. I later bought everything and then some. Cd revolution is coming as most vinyl gets totally hammered ie from bad cartridges to warping to excessive handling. The cd box set had about twice as much music as the typical vinyl box set. The response from labels will be quicker as cds are easier and faster to manufacture. Why today's record buyer abandoned cd's, I'll never know as so much stuff got reissued onto cd each year. The number of titles that came out each week on cd eclipsed this year's RSD by tenfold.
@kenmicallefjazzvinylaudiop64555 жыл бұрын
Vinyl sales have far eclipsed CD, and in fact nothing is much released on CD, mostly sreaming and vinyl. GO look for a CD player at Best Buy. Good luck. Why? Cause CDs sound like crap. Kids raised on crap MP3s heard vinyl and went made for it. VInyl sales have gone up 5% every year for the last ten years. now we have major labels reissuing everything, rock jazz and classical. IF used sales could be counted as I've said for years and as Forbes just reported, total sales of vinyl would be astronomical. CDs can get scratched and not play, the jewel-boxes fall apart, and there's nothing to look at or read. RIP CD. The only resurgence will be in box sets, which is already happening with Miles Davis, those CD box sets are very valuable.

A very good interview. I've started putting people into one of two groups. Music Lovers or Audiophiles (Equipment) folks. Video upcoming. I put you in the music lovers group and Steve in the equipment group. Of course most people are a little of each. I'm a music lover.
@kenmicallefjazzvinylaudiop64555 жыл бұрын

@sidvicious31295 жыл бұрын
I would put Steve in both groups, Steve has stated many times, he doesn’t care about pressings, formats, including he new MQA. Steve is a lover of music that he wants to hear sound as great as can be reproduced in his listening space. Writing about equipment is his business as he has also described, learning how to listen is personal. Ken is an obvious lover of music, being a musician, but Ken also wants his music to sound as great as possible in his listening space. Ken just chooses to write about both and Steve about equipment, but both are Audiophiles. If you are following Ken or Steve, equipment is a means to an end and both Ken and Steve are masters at conveying that message. Richard, if you think about the time and expense of setting up that nice system of yours, if Music was the only interest, you could listen on a Radio or Bluetooth and get enjoyment because you only want the music, but if you are an Audiophile you will spend the money and time to have what you love being reproduced at a great sound level. Steve has said and I agree embrace being both. You are an Audiophile Richard be proud of it, this is a message that Steve has discussed many times.

15:38 to 16:20 listen to what Steve is saying about format and time. I think a lot of the "camps" for Vinyl, CD or streaming miss this fact. Audio recorded to be produced on vinyl, typically sounds better on vinyl. A song recorded by a pop/rock/folk artist in the 90's, in my experience, does not offer the same magic when listening to a record over the CD, because the focus was not to make the record sound the best, but rather the CD. I have found some contentment in purchasing music on the medium that was the most popular at the time it was recorded. That and $5 will get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks.

I enjoy Steve's take on things. And have been watching his channel for a while now. I would say that how a record is pressed is really what makes the difference more than the mastering. I have purchased pressing from some companies (Get Back) that are so bad that the mastering would not get through no matter what. The physical process of making the record makes the most difference to me. At least for now anyway. Thanks for the interview Ken. I hope you have Steve back soon. Charles

Labels like Get Back rely on the short copyright period in Europe. Many of them use the CD as their 'master', so even if the pressing were perfect it would still sound inferior to a record made from a real master tape.

@2:07 "Mastering is not making a literal one-to-one copy of the master tape" Yes, that is true. But why? What is on the master tape that is wrong? What compels the engineer to change it from what it is? Yes, that is what they get paid to do. But why are they being paid to do it? The only changes for which I am in favor would be the level of gain for each stem. This is to ensure that, for example, a guitar is not so loud that it hurts your eardrums (yet, there are countless examples of the gain being much too loud for this or that, or much too low for something else -- they just cannot seem to get it right).

That's a weird one Steve ... I'll take you to task on it. The music should not "mean" any less if you don't physically 'own it'. That's not what music is about. It's about how music touches 'you', not how you touch 'it'. If I hear the same tune on record, CD, file, and I will NOT stream, car radio ... it has the same effect on me. And I don't believe being a musician has anything to do with this either. Ok ... Carry on 😉
