you're spot on! It's an amazing sound. Didn't even sound like a plane but as it passes you can hear the cylinders firing. I love the sound of them!

You guys that are talking about Rare Bear being the fastest piston engine aircraft have to realize that this video was made back in 1979. That's over 30 years ago. This plane was way ahead of it's time in performance!!!

I saw the RB-51 in 1976 at the Red Baron Flying Service in Idaho Falls during an air show, it was right after they had completed the installation of the Griffon engine, it made 4 passes at 400+ at half throttle. Not sure who was at the helm. RB had just purchased a F-104 Starfighter, sans engine.

Nice video. I remember reading that in the late 30's, German engineers figured out that 500 mph was almost impossible for prop planes so they started planning for the jet ages.
@devilsoffspring55193 жыл бұрын
Remember that these aircraft are modified heavily, carry no weapons, and have the engines producing very high output. WW2 era engine oil probably wasn't up to the task, and engine reliability would have been unacceptable for combat. Actually, I think the Germans did manage to get a piston engine aircraft (Bf-109) up to about 500 MPH back in the 1930s by modifying it. It wasn't combat-capable by any stretch, though.

That plane used to be hangared at Eufaula, AL. airport and flown by Mac McClain of Eufaula. It had twin counter rotating props and McClain would fly it in races out West somewhere, maybe Reno. Anyone remember McClain, or was it McLain?

Can anyone tell me exactly how the engines on the Reno Racers have been modified compared to the original WW2 engines? I know that they've put special fuel in them and they suspend the normal operating limitations - but what other modifications have they made, exactly? Many thanks.

523 is the Rare Bears record. However, early this year Voodoo broke the record with a new speed of 532. The Bear isn't as fast with a four blade prop as it was with the big triple blade prop. My Uncle, Mike Looney, was a mechanic for the bear up until 2011.

Don't know what the big deal was, the XP-47J a modified Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, achieved a top speed of 505 mph in level flight on August 4, 1944 at 34,500 feet over a course in Farmingdale, New York, piloted by Mike Ritchie. That was 1944 and a radial air cooled engine! Nothing could top the R-2800.

jordanfrye frye. But that was at 34,500 ft. It couldn't come close to that speed at 100 ft. altitude. The world speed record has to meet specific requirements.
