I recall the edge saying "drowning man" is their best recording. Now that I think about, edge may have said favorite recording. Sorry. But its one of the two, either best or favorite.

Followed u2 from 81 to 88. Drowning man is still my favourite record. Followed closely by love comes tumbling and walk to the water. Drowning man has an aura that's tangible. As a film composer today, i know these songs are caught in the moment. They're rare and unique. Lost love for their new tunes when rattle and hum became a path they went on. Americana. Still, it was a special time.

I'm 53 and it got to a point long ago for me where I could smell an alternative or hipster agenda a mile away when it came to those supposedly into music who would bash a band like U2. When someone allows an agenda to dictate their taste, then it is no longer about the music. There's just such a richness to the musical landscape when it comes to U2's creative ascension beginning in the early '80s. "Elvis Presley and America" has to be the last thing I hear before I shuffle off this mortal coil.

Amen. Same here. U2 are my favorite band since 1983. I predicted one cold winter night while doing homework in the mid 80’s as a teen that they would be massively successful while listening to New Year’s Day. I just knew

Their first 4 albums WERE the U2 that any music fan who can understand a bands identity would identify with and adore over all the others .. for the most part. Their first 2 records were simply the best, and October was THE best and yet the most downplayed and underplayed .. such is the condition of the mainstream listener and music industry.

Eh, even the band admits that October was a rushed misfire. I love their early stuff but I disagree. For me, had U2 disbanded for some crazy reason after Zooropa in 1993, October would go down as their weakest album. The Joshua Tree, Achtung and Unforgettable Fire are my top 3 from them, probably followed by War. So I'm with you to a point. To completely dismiss The Joshua Tree and Achtung gets a big eye roll from me.

@catnapgee5357 - Yeah, I've never understood the general dislike towards 'October' either! It's my #2 U2 album after 'Achtung Baby'. I guess this also is strongly determined by my personal memories connected with particular music, though. U2 had become my favourite band after The Police had vanished, and they would keep that spot until the release of that dreadful 'Rattle And Hum' album (and also movie) BS; I don't exactly hate music by people like Dylan and B.B. King, but I really did not need to hear U2 collaborate with them and turn all 'American', soundwise. I was glad and relieved when the next album, 'Achtung Baby', turned out great again. But that excitement started to wane again already with the release of the 'Zooropa' album. I did give U2 several more tries after that, via buying 'Pop' and whatever that album was called that had the very promising 'Beautiful Day' on it, but I eventually realised that U2 simply weren't for me anymore. ...Luckily already in '89 I discovered the mighty RUSH 😁

@@greg6602 I never heard it to be "rushed" or "misfired". The bands experience and the way they interpret their own work should be of no consequence to the listener. They easily could have said that October took them "so long" and they really worked to get it right, and still it wasn't a huge hit, and we would have then perceived it as such an album, while still, either liking it or not. As a producer/musician, you could not point me to one song, or one part on any of their songs October, that I couldn't see it taking the time necessary to create, with the best results that we all seek to get in the recording studio. It was such a passionate, melodic, "moody", and warm record that captured the best "feel" of the early 80s rock. When I was in high school, I didn't think I cared for it, yet now I know, that I really loved it. Cheers!
