Steve Lucas was a founding member of inner-city Sydney punk band X. Formed in 1977 amidst the developing punk scene, the band quickly became known for their outrageous and incredibly loud live performances. Their first album X-Aspirations, produced by Lobby Loyde, was recorded in just five hours and is considered a classic of Australian punk. While on the road in 1984, X’s drummer left unexpectedly and Cathy Green was suggested by their recording company as a possible replacement. Her swing backbeat style worked so well with the rest of the band that Lucas threatened to quit if she didn’t become a permanent member. Cathy Green is one of a number of high-profile female drummers who rose to prominence during the 1980’s post punk era including Clare Moore of The Moodists and Lindy Morrison of The Go-Betweens.
In this interview with Ian McFarlane, Steve Lucas and Cathy Green speak about their experiences working with Lobby Loyde, learning ballroom dancing, and opening for The Ramones.
