When fellow KZbin creator Nonstop Eurotrip set me a challenge, I just couldn't turn it down. Within a couple of days I was standing on the platform at Montrose Railway Station looking forward to the long journey south. Are you ready for the stress of seeing if I make it in 24 hours? Enjoy the video :D
Filmed on 18th/19th March 2024
Music courtesy of epidemicsound.com

This video is not sponsored and all opinions are my own
I don’t pretend to be a travel expert, but I love what I do and would be honoured if you came along with me. My channel focusses on the wide-eyed wonder and excitement of finding somewhere new, and my genuine reaction to it. You may not get a history lesson in my videos, but who knows, you might pick up some useful travel tips along the way, add a few destinations to your bucket list and hopefully be entertained by what you see. Thanks for watching, it means a lot to me :)
I do ALL of this myself. Planning, filming, editing, promoting, all with a weekly upload schedule, so please understand not every video will be an epic adventure. But my pledge is to always do my best in any situation and KEEP THE CAMERA ROLLING :)

FAQs:
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was born in Glasgow but have lived in Carnoustie, Dalgety Bay, Stonehaven, Edinburgh, Montrose, and further afield (Salamanca, Spain & Devonport, New Zealand)
WHEN DO YOU UPLOAD?
Saturdays at 10am Scottish time. Occasionally a bonus midweek video will pop up (in which case, likely to be Tuesday at 5pm)
WHY IS THERE A DELAY BETWEEN TRIP AND VIDEO APPEARING?
This is both my business model and a result of doing everything myself. Editing takes time and I also like to schedule videos a bit in advance in case of any problems/illness/cancellations etc. Keeping my uploads appearing every Saturday is important to me, so I don’t want anything to get in the way of it. Also, I occasionally need some time off to recover from trips! But more than anything else, it's about budgets. I generally need to film a number of videos on each trip to break even. And each one of these take a while to fall into place on a Saturday morning.
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
I film with a GoPro11 and my iPhone12. I edit on iMovie and use epidemicsound.com for music. I also use canva.com for thumbnails etc. I also have a DJI Pocket 3 (bigger sensor) for nighttime, although I’m still getting to grips with it.
WHY DON'T YOU SPEND LONGER AT DESTINATIONS?
The usual suspects I'm afraid - time and money! Hotels especially these days make my eyes water like a true Scotsman. Also my weekly upload schedule means I need to keep on the move.
WHERE'S ALICJA?
Alicja will feature whenever possible, but she has her own life and a proper job so it can take a while for our schedules to match up. Trust me though, I prefer it when She is there too!
DO YOU PAY FOR YOUR OWN TRAVEL?
Yes I do. I've only ever accepted a complementary ticket as compensation for a previous problem. All my opinions are frank and honest reflections of travel as I experience it.
WHY THE ADS?
It's my income, I can't do this for free. Notice I don’t have mid-roll ads though!
CAN I CONTACT YOU?
I used to list my email address but felt bad not having the capacity to respond to everything so took it down (and I got a LOT of spam so missed many genuine messages along the way).
HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE CHANNEL?
Watching my videos is of course support enough, but if you'd like to support further, I'll pop links in here for Paypal and Patreon. All kind donations are super-appreciated and will go 100% towards future filming trips.
DO YOU ACCEPT SPONSORSHIPS?
I don't like to upset the flow of my videos, so I don't even include mid-roll ads anymore (at significant loss of income to myself), so I prefer not to include sponsorships either. I'm open to a small slide at the start/end of each video, but I don't want to get into talking about products, it's something I don't like as a viewer myself (especially as a viewer who pays for KZbin Premium). So it's probably a polite no, although all of this goes out the window if you offer me something which can give me the chance to make a video for my audience that would otherwise be impossible.

I don't know about recognising Paris so easily but when you showed the first station in Switzerland I could tell that from the architecture. Travelling around Europe last year you could virtually always tell which country you were in by the buildings. I found Swiss railways to be excellent at least the local trains in the Interlaken area. They were on time and when you reached the station the connecting train was waiting at the platform. The trains were modern, clean and comfortable, I did buy a rail pass which covered the trains, mountain railways, cable cars and lake steamers.

Great video, I really enjoyed seeing this journey alongside a fun concept of doing it within 24hrs. Also, as someone who lives in both Nottingham and London then travels to Edinburgh for work semi-regularly. I felt seen in this video…😆. First, I’ve taken the Lumo to London quite a few times and I knew you’d likely not get any sleep. It’s truly a budget train experience and they’re usually quite noisy/busy. Second, as a very frequent passenger on the train from London to Nottingham - the prices you saw are correct and absurd. Keep up the good work.

Back in 2012 I did something similar. I’d always wanted to travel from my home in Dundee to my friends in Marseilles entirely by rail so ….. Train Dundee tonEdinburgh then sleeper Edinburgh to London Euston; walk to Kings Cross/St Pancreas to catch Eurostar then Gare du Nord. I took an internal Paris train to the Gare de Lyons, from where I took a TGV straight to Marseilles. There, my friend met me at the station. Total time about 18 hours station to station. The journey was done when sleeper trains were reasonably priced - relatively.

I read some stat that 96% (or thereabouts, a lot anyway) of all late trains in Switzerland, the lateness is caused by trains that are arriving from other countries. So basically, Swiss trains, in Switzerland, never late. And from my experience, that’s true. Great video Steve, thank you.

Yes - I remember arriving at Berne Station for a train to Interlaken and being met by a staff member apologising for it's late running and suggesting the concourse shops or cafes to pass the time.....despite it only being 15 minutes behind schedule! I remarked how I thought it unusual for a train to run late in Switzerland - his answer "Ah, that's because it's come from Germany!"

I am travelling from the Netherlands to Switserland by train almost every year. It is TOP. Nice video again, Steve. I guess you could have done this well under 15 hours but than it would have been pretty boring, with fast connections both in London and Paris, with an underground running RER line D in Paris (with which you can get a 20 minutes connection between Paris Nord and Paris Gare de Lyon). But than you also have to book it really in advance because of the prices.... Last minute bookings are so expensive nowadays. As you say in the video: it absolutely is crazy, in Britain even more so as on the continent.

We’re all kids at heart, eh Steve! The first time I travelled on a double decker train was a short hop in Holland. Like you I was SO excited to be sitting upstairs!

I remember the long line ups at St. Pancreas station when I travelled from London to Paris. Beautiful station though. I too was amazed at how fast they get people through security & passport check. Another stellar video.

Excellent photography is picture perfect. Thanks for the virtual race against time. I visited Lausanne and Montreux in 2010 and loved it.

Cool video again Steve! Nice challenge as well. And those few minutes you filmed in Switzerland just make me realize how much I miss going there! It has been way too long, what a stunning place with perfect trains!

Wow!! This challenge looked EPIC! 😱 You really pushed yourself with this one, and that ending was SO close! 😅 I can definitely relate to that feeling of needing a shower and bed after a long journey. 😴 Congrats on getting from Scotland to Switzerland by train in under 24 hours 🎉. That must have been an amazing adventure!

What is it with KZbinrs and swiss trains. You are the 3rd youtuber I have seen in the last 24 hours that has brought a video out of trains and the swiss countryside. Great video and scenery.

Yet another cracking video Steve. I took the train from Geneva to Montreux & back a few years ago during a visit to CERN. Stunning scenery & a great destination. I particularly liked the artworks down by the water.

A 24-hour challenge ends with just 1 minute to spare! That was worthy of the old Clarkson/ Hammond/ May "Top Gear" challenges. I was waiting for the moment when you realised you had boarded the wrong train in Lausanne. 😃 Leave it to Vestibule Steve 👍👏

Well done for that epic challenge ! As a former inhabitant of Montreux, I hope you'll enjoy this nice (but really overpriced) little town on the shore of Lake Geneva. I hope you'll come more often to Switzerland, we have some epic sights to show you (especially if you're on a rail pass). Cheers from Switzerland !
