I actually watched the previous episode in full with my wife and she said to me, Mark, we should do that very same journey next summer. We were looking for Nordic themed cruises for some time but this trip is actually a mini cruise and it brings you all the way up to Iceland which was also on our bucket list. So thanks so much Steve for bringing us along on this journey. We are now looking to book this very same trip in the spring of 2025. Holiday sorted. 😁 The voyage had some spectacular views and as added bonus is the short stay at the Faroe Islands.

Here in the U.S., there's no ferry travel. Large parts of the country are not served by Amtrak. Europe has the right idea and their rail systems are so impressive. I've always been fascinated by the North Atlantic Scottish islands, not to mention the Faroes and Iceland. Thank you so much for taking me along on these adventures! How does it feel to know that what you do is loved and appreciated by so many people? Much love to you!

The Jones Act severely limits how many ferries the USA has. Imagine if every domestic air trip in the USA had to be flown with an aircraft made in the USA.
@Janejeera2 ай бұрын
In the US, try the Alaska Marine Highway System but the ferries are old and less sophisticated.
@Dan-fo9dk2 ай бұрын
The Jones Act enacted by the US Congress after ww1 was meant to "stimulate the US shipping industry".....but they shot them self in the foot .....and the result you can observe yourself. It's an act of protectionism which requires all ships to be build in the US and that the crew must be from the US....and so on. USA is not a shipping nation so to expect something to happen from nothing ....well....the result is given. USA don't have the competence or resources to build larger, modern and complex ships....nor do they have competent crew to run such ships. Not a single passenger ship of size are being build in the US .... While Europe is the place to go for finding all these capabilities. In Europe there are large passenger ferries and cruise ships in every direction. There are potentially very interesting routes for ferries in the US ....but not under the current regulations..... The only ferry routes in the US to speak of is the so called "Alaska Marine Highway System" ....which is so outdated that it is mostly a joke. The other "ferries" in the US (like the one in Galveston area) are not much more than barges....

Unless you're bringing a car, I believe taking a plane is actually using less fuel per passenger than taking a ferry like this. I'd love to take this trip, but the environment is not one of the reasons for it.
@Dan-fo9dkАй бұрын
@@gunnar6674 The ferry Norrøna is a vital piece of infrastructure for Faroe-islands and Iceland. It's not a cruise ship. It goes the route year around either you travel with it or not. That means your idea concerning fuel use is wrong. Hence the extra fuel use if there are one person extra or 200 persons extra is so marginal that you can just ignore it. Norrøna is a ship of nearly 37000 gross ton.

My sea-going experience is more limited than yours. In January 1961 I was on a troop ship from New York to Bremerhaven and in March 1963 the reverse trip. Ten days going and eleven days returning. Neither experience was pleasant. Your ship seems to have a number features the troop ship lacked. Lucky you! Among my many unpleasant memories is how “angry” to water looked. Ever since I have stayed as far away from oceans as possible. But the trip gave me a lot of stories to tell my grandchildren. Some of them are even true.

So looking forward to seeing your tour of Iceland. I booked a flight from Seattle to London on Icelandair in Dec of '22, with layovers on both ends, coming and going, so I could spend some winter time in Reykjavik. Unfortunately, that was the year of the huge blizzard that stranded thousands at the airport. My 18 total hours of layovers was reduced to a mere 20 minutes on the return leg. I guess I'll just have to enjoy Iceland vicariously through you, Steve.

A very interesting journey and a look round the well appointed ferry. This is the best ferry I’ve seen and feels more like a short cruise. You said it must be as good as a cruise ship. They tend to have more luxury and emphasis on losing your money, such as gambling in the casino and buying paintings at auctions. But this ship is very nice and certainly a treat to go on. I think if I didn’t live in Australia, I’d be going on it next summer. Thanks for the video, Steve, you go to places where, it’s grateful us viewers to have a look before we go ourselves. Steve that was a wonderful tour, thank you. One part of the tour which really tickled the memory cells was the visit to the indoor swimming pool. The ship I travelled on to UK in 1973 was the ex SS America renamed "SS Australis" and she had the most wonderful indoor pool on the lowest deck. I'm not sure if it was below the sea level but it was my favourite place to cool off in the tropics. It was looking a bit aged but when you consider it was from the 1940's you can imagine the styling was something else. They also had a gym adjacent with those funny steam boxes you could sit in with your head out. Ha ha .. rowing machines etc. Thank you so much it was a treat.

Fascinating seeing the inside . Also nice to see they also had an outside area for the crew. We had an area on the mv Hjaltland (Northlink Ferries), where we could get fresh air during a break or when off duty, where you could relax and unwind without being bothered by passengers. If you think about it, the catering crew are inside for 11 hours then go to the crew mess room for food, relax, then still inside to go to their cabin for sleeping. Pity I don’t work for Northlink as I would definitely given you a behind the scenes tour, engine room, bridge, crew mess room - the real heart of a ship! Lol
