Re: the bit at about 8:50, sliding vs bending. Steve does both in a single performance. I prefer the sound of the slide, but substituting a bend adds interest as a variation.

about a month into learning banjo, this song is the reason im learning. i will definitely say, skip notes are throwing me off LOL, this is gonna take some practice

This is definitely a tough one to take on as your first song. Not to discourage you-it’s good to aim high! I would say start playing it WITHOUT skips until you get it under your fingers. Skipping is a whole other technique outside of your traditional bum-ditty pattern. This song is mostly just a bunch of bum-dittys. Try it straight through at first and I think it will come a little easier. Ping me here if you need further help!

I’m having trouble with the timing of the refrain at 12:55, particularly what chords are on the downbeat etc.

Try playing it WITH the skipped notes (notes in parenthesis) at first and see if that helps. That should at least ground you in the flow of the song. Once you’ve got that down you can skip when needed. There is a lot of skipping in this song and sometimes it’s hard to demonstrate. One of those things you have to feel out a bit.
