Steve sounds great. He pulled this off nicely. Dixie Dregs was his best band. In the early 80s he was extremely influential and featured heavily in the guitar mags. These are the guys he belongs with.

The first time I saw Steve Morse was with the Dixie Dregs at "My Father's Place" in Roslyn NY around 83 or so? It was around the "Unsung Heroes" era... I had never heard of them but a friend invited me... All I can say is WOW! Man I was blown away... And that's from a guy who was already listening to Mclaughlin, Coryell, Di Meola and other fusion masters...

We used to go see Dixie Dregs play in bars around Atlanta in the mid-1970's! It's great to see that they are still together and rocking.

It's hard to explain to young people the effect that Steve had in the late 70's early 80's. When I got my first Dregs record - "Dregs Of The Earth" - it seemed like it was from outer space. Coupled with the fact that we read that Steve would write every note for every instrument, he seemed even more incredible. He also exposed people to classical guitar and counterpoint and had extraordinary technical abilities - I don't play music like this now, but he was a supreme role model for any young guitarist and I thank him for the influence that he had on my life.

Steve did a “workshop” with Dave LaRue at Sweetwater back in ‘14 for free. Maybe 100 people there. I took my then 16 year old son who was getting into classic rock. It was simply amazing. Answered questions, oh and played and played, and played. They did a meet and greet afterwards and he signed my Unsung Heroes cd.

Saw them in Macon at the start of the tour. Unbelievably great! Closing set, with both bands on stage, was unreal. You can tell most of these guys have been playing together for +50 years!

Steve Morse live only once, it was in 2008 with Deep Purple, i went to see the show for mr Morse and he was really great, i was very surprised that day since all the members of Deep Purple were energized, it was a fantastic show, one of the very best that i saw in my life, last year i saw Deep Purple live once more but without mr. Morse, it was Simon Mcbride on guitar and he was fantastic, it was surprisingly another great show by Deep Purple, thanks mr. Mark Adams for sharing, cheers!!!

What a cool story! Regarding Rudess, every time I started recording he stopped soloing, or when I stopped recording he started. My best angle was definitely on center stage. Wish I could have gotten some, and from a better angle! Hope it was all a fantastic trip for you!

Steve won the Guitar Player reader’s poll ‘Most Valuable Player’ award, (in the ‘80s) and he either won it for three years, or five years in a row-I forget which. That, then, put the person in the so-called ‘Gallery of the Greats’. Al DiMeola, I believe Pat Metheny, and Steve Howe, among others, were also Gallery of the Greats recipients. As far as I’m concerned, Steve created his own genre-I like to call it Dregs Music. One of a kind! Be sure and check out his interview with Rick Beato-it’s wonderful!

Randy Cooke; when I was16/18 ish; I got to witness his mastery. I saw him with both Lee/Rik in the early 90'$. My dad owned a small lighting/production house in Windsor Ont. Headwater audio; Rick, Spinner, Spike/Zakoor all did audio at some point, and when I worked there, there was a live board mix on cassette of Emmett; I played the hell out of that! Randy rocked solid ass fawk. Gave me his Z4 stick's. Chewed to the bone, last time I spoke with him, was maybe 2002; playing for Sass, was with Zakoor. He may remember. ✌🏾🥁

Steve Morse is a monster. One of greatest electric guitar articulators of all time. He had to change his picking technique mid-stream due to arthritis. You can see how he alters his picking technique during those fast runs.

@@Scorchinscotty That's a good observation about his creating his own genre; the mix of influences was fascinating, resulting in a totally unique style of writing and playing. and obviously, Steve's unique talent and work ethic were the central ingredient that made it all work so beautifully! I recall an interview decades ago, with a person on his crew, a guitar player who was asked if he envied Steve getting up and doing his thing, while he was stuck in a support role. He said any jealous feeling went away as soon as he spent a little time around Steve and realized that he wouldn't have wanted to spend every spare minute practicing, and saw that Steve had to do that to maintain his abilities; he just realized he was more comfortable not being the big star with the heavy pressure and constant work; not for everyone, obviously!

I worked for Steve back in 1984 for a Gig where he was a 1 man show. The place was Club Manhattan in Spring Valley, NY. It was Steve his Guitar Rig and a small Amp plus a rack with 5 or 8 guitars and a cassette tape player that we mic'd up. I sat on the stage on a folding chair just to be there if he needed any help. Someone in the crowd kept after me wanting me to take a close up picture of Steve. Well Steve and i had talked about this very situation so i finally got Steve's attention and he just smiled at me. I knew it was time for the picture. I got about 3 feet from his hands and snapped 2 or more super close ups. He asked me to come with him the next night to his Carganey Hall Gig but unfortunately i was already on the call at Club Manhattan as i worked the stage crew there. I still wonder if I had gone and worked that Gig with him if I would have gotten the Gig as his guitar tech seeing Id just come off a 6 month Gig with Dicky Betts. I also wonder if that person still has those pictures I took that night at Manhattan. I got to meet and work for some amazing musicians between 1983 and 1986. Those days were amazing and a joy to work.

So it killed me to hear the Dregs in the short little snippet of "I am Freaking Out" because it was the song I'd hoped to hear the most when I saw them in the early 80's on the "Unsung Heroes" tour. I actually got to see them twice inside of a month of each other and they did not play it. I couldn't understand why they didn't play such a cool song. My only guess is because of time. It's a lengthy track. But from the first time I'd heard that song on, Dregs Of The Earth it became "that song" for me but sadly I never got to see it performed live and have never until now seen evidence of them ever doing it live. I wonder why now?

He's playing with Steve Morse Band as the band opener, and then later he's playing with Dixie Dregs as the main act. Crazy! The only other man I remember doing this is Steve Howe, playing with Asia as opening band, and then later playing with Yes as the main act. Of course it might be no coincidence both were awarded 5-times Best Guitarist by Guitar Magazine in a row.
