I saw Bam with Steve-O at his show in Bellingham a couple months ago. You can really tell that Steve-O wants nothing more than to see Bam succeed, get sober and better himself. And you could also see that Steve-O was just plain happy to be reunited with a long-time friend and to bring him along for the ride. It's hell to watch someone you care about so deeply circle the drain, knowing that all your efforts are exhausted.

I never would've guessed Steve developed into the man he is today ... A lot of us have struggled with addiction, and we all know someone who partied in college and never stopped. When you're in your 20s it's all well and good, but in your 40s, when you have a kid? For me I luckily found a healthy (albeit dangerous) replacement in downhill mountain biking, and I wouldn't be typing this if I hadn't gotten into it. I think that's something missing in Bam's life, and he's too old for skateboarding, so he needs something to be passionate about again. And people who haven't been in his shoes can't comprehend how getting clean for his son isn't motivation enough, but that's usually not how it works. For me, I had to get some kind of rush to get my adrenaline pumping. Chemically, I needed to replace the serotonin and endorphins, and luckily that did the trick ... I hope Bam finds something for him, that gets him out of bed in the morning and gives him that rush he's obviously missing.

The entire two years, he drank maybe 2 or 3 times, when a family member like his own mother or friend drove him to a bar and allowed him to. The thing that the jackass people were on his ass about, and firing him for were the prescribed meds though, not even the drinking. He goes to these rehabs and just gets fed the same medication, so these fake friends and jackass losers get to throw him out and take advantage of him every time he takes a pill that he's supposed to actually take. Steve O is a miracle. Drug addiction is something few people survive the way Steve-O has. Bams maturity is observably stunted, I have hope…but I know what i see. I don’t know the age of his child, but I know for me, it took me till a week before my daughters 4th birthday. I was raised well by good family and there wasn’t no way I was going to let my daughter see me the way I was. She has no memory of what a idiot loser I was, but I have all the regret in the world not getting sober sooner. I watch videos of my daughter at age 1-3 and cry because I didn’t appreciate the preciousness at the time. I also changed to save my marriage, unfortunately I did so much damage in the 5 years of marriage my marriage dissolved a few years later. Sober people really can’t understand the compulsive selfishness of an addict, I don’t blame her mother I still have love for her and she’s a great mother and gave me the one person that likely saved my life. I hope Bam can figure it out, but slip ups will likely be apart of the process and chastising and expressing frustration usually doesn’t help sick people. Addicts need love and encouragement as counter intuitive as it sounds, especially those that really don’t want to be an addict. there’s no off switch…

Not constantly wanting everyone around him to "fix" him. When everyone around you wants you to be someone/something you're not all party's become resentful. How would anyone feel being around say 10 people, telling you 10 different ways you should be to make them happy? Just love your friend. I have so many friends I wish I had one more day with. I promise you if God gave me another day with them I wouldn't spend it trying to fix them to my liking. We are all going to die. Some sooner than others. I go back and forth between being very sympathetic for Bam and pissed off at everyone trying to force him to get better or use dozens of tactics to "encourage" him to stay clean and healthy to understanding why they are doing it and I get mad at Bam for not realizing that he has amazing family and friends and ability to do anything he wants. It's a terribly sad situation and tragically sad for everyone involved. But the reason I feel like I do comes from two different reasons. One being that I've struggled with addiction almost my whole life but not because I wanted to get high or foolishly got addicted to drugs from using them but because I severely broke my back and pelvis when I was 15 while freestyle motocrossing before freestyle motocrossing was really a thing. Or at least to the point that it is now. I launched an old 80's model Yamaha 250 way further in the air than it ever should have been and it landed right on top of me pretty much breaking me in half. Felt exactly like what I imagine it feels like being struck by lightning. Anyways from that point on I was fed a steady stream of all kinds of opiate pain medications. I never wanted to get high or be high but being high was the only way I could remotely function and have any kind of quality of life. So I understand addiction and I understand the need to not hurt. And I get mad when people want a person to suffer in a body racked with pain so they can be "healthy" and live a longer life. But then here's the second part I had a friend who was the greatest person a person could be but he was a hardcore addict. He wouldn't steal a thing or lie or hurt anyone ever no matter what but he had to be high or intoxicated all the time. He was like my brother and I loved him so much. I tried hard to get him to get help and get his life together. He had amazing talent and was the greatest person to be around. One day I was told that he had ODed on heroin and had been dead for over 3 minutes but somehow they were able to bring him back. But he came back with massive brain damage and all his jet black hair turned white as note book paper. He couldn't walk or talk and had to live in a nursing home/rehabilitation home for a year and a half. He eventually learned to walk again and could talk but he was never the same again. He also destroyed his liver and because he was an addict in the state of Texas he wasn't allowed to be put on the organ donor list so the doctors gave him 5-7 years before he would ultimately die. He ate pain pills by the handful and the doctor pretty much gave him as many as he wanted. We would talk all the time about how he wished they had never brought him back. That he was at peace and it felt good to be dead. He said they woke him up just to let him live in hell and agony and with death hanging over his shoulder. I once asked him why he never tried to get well and never be like this and he told me that I needed to stop wondering why but just realize that for some people no matter what they have or can get in life life will never be right for them and it's ok. We all live and die no matter what we do or accomplish or anything else it's a certainty we can't escape. Some people just don't want to live. I hard a hard time trying understand that logic and I couldn't except it for the longest time but I fully understand it now. My friend ended up killing himself about a year later and I have yet to get over it fully. Even decades later. But I always remember his words for some people this life will never be right for them. Maybe it's the same for Bam. I don't know him personally so I can only guess. I hope he can beat this demon but if he can't then we should learn to except it and just hold on to the time we had with him.
@Sincerity028 Жыл бұрын
Steve-o , I know from many close family members I have lost , & still around, when someone does NOT want the help, there’s a point you just have to step away, sadly not talk about that person, let it go, because when that person wants help they will go, do it, or follow through working on rehabilitate themselves. It’s truly one of the most hurtful & hardest feelings to feel & live, knowing it’s best for you to keep your distance & wish the best. Never knowing if the phone call is going to be the heartbreaking news, I will keep Bam & anyone struggling w/ addiction .

Bam’s downhill spiral all started when Dunn died. I understand the struggle all to well. I lost my dad at 12 years old in 2002. Got into drugs in my teens, started shooting heroin and smoking crack, finally got clean for years. Then my best friend died of an overdose, another best friend died few years later. I started drinking myself to death. Got sober again for a year and then my mom died this past October. Started drinking again, im struggling. Bam needs to grow up plain and simple. He needs to take accountability for his actions. Last time he was sober and had interview with Steve o I could tell he was going to relapse by the way he was talking. Every misfortune was always somebody else's fault. Part of getting sober is realizing you are the problem, that using drugs and the attitudes that go along with it are what is destructive and what is making your life unmanageable. Such a shame because Bam was the most successful one early on. He paved the way for what was possible. How you could become a millionaire from what they were doing. Bam needs to let go the past, his hay days are far over and those days will never come to fruition again. Needs to focus on his family and handling his shit. Being sober isn't always easy, but it becomes the new normal eventually. You never want to go that back to that destruction and pain. Bam has so much to live for, he could still have it all. It's only going to get worse if he continues down this path. Never hate the person, hate the addiction.
