I mean, he's David Cross. It's the one through line for this entire career. As funny and sweet as Steve comes off (pun intended), David is logic and reason. It's why so many of us love him. But I genuinely love the dichotomy of a hopeless romantic with traumatic brain injuries and substance abuse chopping it up with the one-and-only David Cross. I've met the Jackass folks many times in my life due to living proximity. Even still, when I first saw Dave's guest, I thought wtf..? And it turned out to be one of my favorite podcasts in recent memory. Kudos to both of them for knowing how to play off one another.

still interesting ideas regardless of true or not. there's been sort of new era of atheism because of how we collectively figured out "religion is total bs", but one should still have an open mind to stuff. I'm not saying believe anything you hear but consider the possibilities of such ideas. Thats how we discovered the earth was round and we go around a solar system by considering ideas that people thought were bs a the time and exploring them.

Watching David handle Steve-O with kids gloves and have a nice/genuine conversation is a nice change of pace from the frantic comedy back and forth between him and Odenkirk/Bateman. Dave should’ve started a podcast a long time ago.

@@adamdrakestudio Bingo. And every. single. comedian has a podcast. My guess is he didn’t want to be “that guy.” But at the end of the day, as Maron (and many others - save for Rogan’s band of idiots) has showed: if podcasts are done correctly, especially with a nice video/audio setup, it’s a fun experience for all. Even though I thoroughly enjoyed the Steve-O pod, the Odenkirk one was WAY more entertaining. They’re the OGs. Much as I love Steve, he got famous for eating disgusting crap and taking direct nut shots. I’m not hating at all. I got to drink with Ryan Dunn a couple days before his death. Might’ve even been the actual night, but was obv a while ago. The Jackass folks are funny and down-to-earth (except Johnny), so of course Steve will be a fun guest. Just highly doubt this would’ve been Dave’s 3rd overall guest if Steve didn’t have a MASSIVE (multi-million) subscriber “base.”

The Mandarin thing shouldn't even be a concern to an actor doing it because the target of the joke is the one *telling* them to do it in Mandarin. The *victim* in the scene, thereby becomes the actor who feels pressured to actually *do* it. They can play inside the actual *performance* of that in a million ways without them being the one in the wrong (sweating while trying to make the director think they know Mandarin by making it up, etc., etc.) - it's the weirdo who told them to do it in Mandarin first who's the target of any ire from an audience and that covers the whole thing in a protective Macro-dome that works on a whole other sociological level. ;-) The actors likely aren't afraid of the joke, itself, but it being taken out of context - but the context is that it's a joke *about* human behavior, which makes it funny - and not in any way targeting, even in a peripheral way, the language.

@uncletom356
@uncletom356 6 ай бұрын
He’s called himself a “capitalist clown”? Citation? Just curious. But that’d be fairly apt. Especially with how blasé he was talking about Chappelle. Although, he’s Steve-O. I can’t imagine him having the type of hatred for trans folks and a (newfound) proclivity of punching down. One of David’s (and my) biggest pet peeves of comedians. The entire reason comedians exist is to make folks laugh. This idea that they’re modern day philosophers and prophets is blown way out of proportion. A few are: Odenkirk, Cross, Heidecker, Maron, Shandling (RIP), Burnham and plenty of others. But the capitalist douches - at least in recent years - like Dave, Rock, Hart and everyone in Rogaine’s orbit suck so much. Shame too, as they’re all naturally funny. But they’ve become insufferable. Bill Burr is the only one who can straddle both “lines” without coming off as an ass. Disagree with some of his takes, but overall, he’s a positive for comedy imo.

A while ago I heard Dan Soder say something mildly critical about Chappelle (essentially just that he found chapelle's recent specials to not be so great) and man it was fucking nice to hear. I get why it's the case but there are so many tongues in that asshole so constantly, and he hasn't deserved them for years. Even without the baffling and pety transphobic stuff, he just hasn't been that funny for some time now. To me anyway. I mean he wears a fucking jumpsuit with his own name on it. He has a *logo*. I digress. Anyway I've been thinking about the whole comedians as philosophers dynamic for a while now, and it seems mostly that people just like it when they agree and don't like it when they don't. Including me, for sure. But yeah I'm not so sure there are actually any kind of truths beyond the subjective here. Like my whole schpiel on chapelle back there is just how I (and seemingly you I gather, yay us) feel about it. All those boring normals clapping and laughing aren't and can't be wrong, because of course they can't be, it's art. They can still be stinky poos for it though
@jamk2668
@jamk2668 6 ай бұрын
@@uncletom356 Do you really not understand how weirdly biased and misguided this all sounds? "These super white, less popular alt comics I'm listing pull off being modern day philosophers but not these three mostly well received black comics." Haha. Jesus. Firstly, when has Kevin Hart even attempted to be somewhat philosophical in his act? Also, Heidecker is barely a comedian...by his own admission. His one stand up special was just him doing an Andrew Dice Clay parody the whole time, which was somewhat funny but ultimately even more lazy than Chapelle's few trans jokes. Bo Burnham also barely qualifies as a comedian. And his musical numbers are just as "fake deep" as the shit that Steve-O is spouting in this interview. The song "Welcome to the Internet" is literally something I could have written when I was 14 years old. And listing Odenkirk there -- someone who has devoted in his last 20 years to only acting/directing -- is honestly just mystifying. It's also weird to call out Steve O for being a capitalist when every favourable comedian you listed is also one. 'Well, he talks about the money he makes and the others don't, so that's why he's a clown." Jesus. Lastly, this idea of "punching down" is so lame. Every comedian does it to an extent. Most acts that contain a certain amount of "misdirection", by nature, usually include some form of punching down. At the end of the day, comedy is not a high art. There's lots of comedians I think are lame but it's so cringe inducing to spend time thinking about it in this capacity.

@@callumwoulahan7681 It was really just Chapelle's last special that was weak. A lot of people include the long clip Netflix uploaded where he's talking about George Floyd or the one where he's receiving an award from his old high school and both of those don't qualify as specials. His last special before The Closer was Sticks and Stones, which was widely praised by comedians/fans and barely caught much blowback. The issue is that the guy put out six specials in four years, which is unheard of, so his material was less sharp by the end. It's also super disingenuous to act like Chapelle is just pandering to the lowest common denominator like some Larry the Cable Guy style comedian and the people clapping are all just philistines. Then again, you ending it by saying "They can still be stinky poos for it though" makes one kind of disregard anything you say about comedy. That was objectively lame sounding, my guy.

@@SallyMankus130 haha well aren't you a wet little stinky poo poo bum fart monster Dud it feels like you missed my point. I'm not 'correct' about chapelle or anyone else, no more than anyone else is, everyone just likes what they like. So, you know, cool. That's fine, that you feel that way. I'm glad you had fun and laughed. Really. It's cool and nice that you enjoyed dave's recent work, and for me I haven't so much. My frustration being mainly that he really is constantly called the goat and all the rest of it, and I'm a salty little bitch, so me not feeling like he deserves such high praise is annoying. It might be and most likely is super douchey for me to feel this, but it's not disingenuous; I do think chapelle has largely pandered to the lcd in his past few specials ( I wasn't thinking about those other things you mentioned, agreed they don't qualify), and again it's fine if you disagree, but there you go. 'Man, you can't say anything these days. People get so offended so easily...etc' (obv not a literal quote, or the only topic he talks about, but I'm making a general point) Ohhhh reallllllyyyy dave? wow omg wow how did you come up with that, I've never heard 50 other comedians say that. and yeah, there are people clapping for that. Not just laughing. Which they are free to do, and I am free to find lame. Not objectively so, ofc. I'd never be *that* stinky. He's a very talented comic. And he seems real up his own ass for a while now, and not trying as hard as he could or should be. Six specials in four years be damned. If he really is working hard, then ok, but he didn't have to put out that many that quick, and should have worked on his shit some more. But Dave could walk onto a stage a shit out whatever was on his mind that day, and netflix would buy it and people would laugh. I'd laugh, because he's good enough that he could pull that off. But I'd laugh a little, and no way near as much as I could, and yeah man it's hard to feel like that's a million miles away from what he's been doing of late. Also the trans shit, jeez dave. what a bellend

listening a month later - steve-o didn't explain it correctly and what he is referring to is the "block universe" where there is no time because it really just comes down to how you experience reality - which in that theory is the only thing that keeps you from seeing everything at once (a block universe contains everything before and after "now" you just can't experience it as the kind of being you currently are) - like being in 5 dimensions and being able to experience them (all at once), as you can with 3 dimensions and 4 dimensions when you count time as the 4th dimension. david had it correct as to what steve-o was saying that neil degrasse told him (neil was saying there is time because if we have an appointment for tomorrow then we have to travel through time to get to the literal "point in space" - the four dimensions, an x,y,z, and time) - BUT that is not a good enough explanation if you accept the idea of a block universe which is why with validity you can point to the block universe as one stable theory of there being no such thing as time - ["no such thing as gravity" is analogous but is a WHOLE other topic… hahaha] - steve-o just didn't have a good enough grasp to explain it to someone else. -- just found the podcast, really enjoying it! (listened to 3 episodes already…)

Love the juxtaposition of both's comedy and stances on mysticism. Steve-O couldn't be more on-the-nose and a romantic. Whereas, Cross loves subtlety and (long-form) sarcasm, paired with logic and reason. Great match and watch, Steve seems very genuine. The Jackass folks were quite talented. Was more than simply Johnny Knoxville being outrageous. Now, would I compare it to Mr. Show? Hell no. Keep in mind how out of his own mind Steve-O was with the drug use and traumatic brain injuries. To be this lucid is miraculous. (Actually got a chance to share a few beverages with Ryan Dunn just before his passing. Couldn't have been cooler.) Cheers to a great pod, David.

Steveo is unintentionally describing aspects of Hinduism. I really hope he looks into it more because he sounds like he is on the path of some form of Hinduism.

Sounds to me like he is on the path of the California Guru, which draws inspiration from Bhuddism, Hinduism, and others. But this new form of pseudo- religion is spread- not by devotees- but by businessmen who yank these ideas out of their original contexts and turn them into a part of their own personal brand. They market these old ideas for profit. You won't find any credits on the box about the religion they come from. The California Guru takes American individualism up to 11. The focus is entirely on the self, they make no mention of acting in a way that benefits other people. They sell a staggering amount of books, self help courses, podcasts, etc.
