Thanks for sharing. Steve was 2 years older than me. I never knew him (I’m from Alabama) but knew of him. I ran track in high school (180 yard low hurdles) so I became aware of Steve when I was running track. My track coach was a former wide receiver and track star at Auburn University. He told us Steve was the most fascinating runner he had ever seen in person. I wish I had been able to see the Legend race just once. It would have been one of the all time highs that I could have ever experienced.

My high school team all know this guy...before one of our meets/races we always have a carbo-load/pasta party at one of our houses and we watched Prefontaine/ and Without Limits...that was the first time i heard about him...even now he is by far my favorite runner of all time and no matter how good somebody else's time maybe. He will still be #1 in my book.

What bothers me is many high school kids today don't know or respect Steve Prefontaine. I just don't understand that. When I was in high school, graduated in 99', Pre, yes he was gone, was the guy who inspired many of us. Pre gave me the reason/motivation to complete the most difficult workouts in high school and college. Pre gave me the reason to give my complete best. If it was not for Pre, I would not have gone sub 9, pr was 8:58, in the 3200 or 4:12 in the 1600. Pre is a true inspiration..

I loved the pictures and music... well, all but the two pictures of Jared Leto imitating Pre. He was the most charismatic Pre actor, but he was no Pre! I was a Jr. in HS when Pre died... Damn! I was so bummed i never got to see him run in person.

I think it's a shame when people regard Prefontaine as 'the greatest runner in history' etc...It brings him unnecessary negative attention! Of course he was not the greatest - not then - not now. He was the best they had in America - granted...but there were plenty of Europeans who could beat him at 3k-5k even at his best. This takes nothing away from the guy though - he was an immensely tough competitor and a very determined athlete. A great loss to American track and Field. Go Pre!!!

@ratliff2006 Ask someone who has been touched by his life. People know his story. Your East African dominance runners replace themselves every year and no one remembers them.

But who knows, if it weren't for that tragic accident...there's no telling how good he could have become. Personally, I don't think he would ever have been the greatest 5000m runner..he lacked the speed for the final stages of the race. But as for the 10000m - I think he could have done very VERY well. He was much more suited to this distance. If Pre had ever won a gold medal at the Olympics, it would have been in the 10000 for sure. Such a shame we never got to see what he could REALLY do on it

Why are you telling us what your best times were for the mile etc?? What's that got to do with anything? Nobody's interested bud - we're here to talk about Steve not listen to you self-congratulate yourself! Never have gone sub 9 if it wasn't for Pre haha what a load of nonsense...
