The bar shows 300 lbs. But they are fake (probably less than 150 lbs)because is was acting for a movie, not a real exhibition or contest. Anyway, he was a strong guy but when lifting heavy in the gym he wore proper exercise attire, belt, shoes, chalk for the hands and a lifting platform for certain heavy exercises. Other than when posing, he wore a posing trunk while demonstrating exercises in the gym and most people think that is how he trained, which is incorrect. His measurements at 6" tall, 225 lbs, were 18.5" arms, 18.5" neck, 18.5" calves, 50" chest, 26" thighs and a 28" to 30" waist. He went for classic great proportions in those days instead of the cartoon like steroids physics of today. He died at age 72 of pancreatic cancer which can get you no matter what type of physical condition you are in. He was my childhood idol initially although I gravitated into Olympic weightlifting because I had a shot to lift in the Olympics, which I did in 1972. Steve Reeves had the original V shape that became the standard copied by every bodybuilder.
@nortondumont97116 жыл бұрын
I hope you're right about the weight being lighter than it appears because lifting it to the shoulders Continental style, as Reeves does here, would be very difficult in only posing trunks. He displays good pressing form in any case. Hey, did you get to meet Alexeev in Munich?

Does any one know how old this movie is? And if Steve really lifted that weight or if that was a prop? I'm not saying he couldn't have lifted, what looked like maybe 350-lbs, but that stage floor I'm not sure it would have been able to take the impact of iron crashing down on it.
@TonyMon169 жыл бұрын
+Anderson C it was a prop.
@skullduggery33779 жыл бұрын
+Anderson C --- the film was 1954. it was actually a musical comedy. i've never seen it and i don't know why a scene like this would be in it. i would say the barbell was a prop due to the ease in which reeves lowered it.
@AGC8289 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Looked odd shaped. The iron plates. Plus as I said...to even just put down that might weight on a wooden stage? Likely go through it. Or severely weaken it with so much weight on it. All the muscle bound guys in the background. And the way Reeves lifted and lowered that weight. Didn't seem to be done as it should. Odd they wouldn't have coached him. But it was in the mid-50's. We didn't really get films aiming for realism till maybe the late 90's.

Chrono I read somewhere that Steve deliberately didn't do much with his traps and abs because he preferred the aesthetics of the way he looked.
@chrono82339 жыл бұрын
obbzerver I think He also didn't believe in pumping up before a show like everyone else because he didn't think it was "real" You should look however you look without the illusion of a pump. And he also did not like cutting down body fat as much as some others because he didn't think it was healthy to promote that look, instead he wanted to look good and have enough bodyfat to be strong and athletic. You gotta admire someone who has the balls to stand on a stage and not conform and dehydrate yourself to how everyone else looks and preach health and aesthetics.
