I was there when it was played at the Concertgebouw, absolutely floored by this.

The Amsterdam World Premiere at the Concertgebouw October 16th was a moment to treasure forever. The Collin Currie Group and Synergy Vocals are worldclass performers of the music of Steve Reich. Thank you so much

Yes, the Concertgebouw was great, especially the other pieces by Steve Reich. Thanks for posting

Beautifully composed, performed, and recorded. Thanks so much for sharing it. This piece is so new that Wikipedia doesn't even know about it yet!

I just (October 26th 2021) experienced this wonderful piece of music with Colin Currie Group with Synergy Vocals in Hamburg (Elbphilharmonie). I had to hear it again. Thanks for this great music, and thanks for bringing it to youtube.

This is stunning. I don't usually enjoy much new music, but as a Jew I am truly moved by this. Thank you Steve

Steve Reich explains in interviews his preoccupations with medieval French organum, probably the notra dame school, Leonin and Perotim, Hebrew chant and plain song, the meaning of the text, protection for travelors, the vocal lines, canons, vibes, piano punctuation and harmony etc. Good to listen to interviews where he explains these. things.

Indeed, Reich has remarked upon how much he was influenced by Perotin and works like Viderunt Omnes. One of the earliest European composers we actually know by name and to whom specific compositions can be reliably attributed. And he lived two centuries before Machaut-- the same chronological spread as between Bach and Stravinsky!

@@owlcowl I believe Hildegard Von Bingen also composed complete compositions. Mostly tropes before her.

Sounds like Reich's recent works but with a touch of John Cage's "Litany for the Whale".

I find Reich's recent works a mixed bag; generally enjoyable but nothing that makes me sit up and take notice. WTC didn't quite measure up to the gravity of its source material. Have to say, I think this is one of the better ones.

I understand what you mean, I am always feeling regret listening to his recent works, because that I feel that he took a compositional path away from his original and unique musical inventions. But this one IS really a better one... Think I will hear it more often...

Franckly, I do not see what this adds to polyphonies of the Ars Antiqua and Ars Nova periods.

"Franckly" - see what you did there. It may not add anything. Why is that a problem?

Oops I made spelling mistake. English is not my first language. Why is it a problem? Well maybe it is not, but do you want to hear new pieces in the style of Haendel or Beethoven, for example?

It neednt "add" anything to be musically valuable and (IMHO) moving. Stravinsky may not have "added" anything to the concerto grosso form with his "Dumbarton Oaks" concerto but he composed a work so fully comparable to Bach & Handel's great contributions in the genre that it has been dubbed "Brandenburg Number 7" and deservedly so.

Although you wouldn't know it from this recording, it is possible to sing in tune with no vibrato. Excruciating. This is a musician's Room 101.
