One of my favorite technical guitarists of the 80s. Right up there in my book with guys like Steve Vai, George Lynch and Warren DeMartini. Saw him with Vince Neil in the 90s and the guy can shred with the best. Plus, he plays a mean flamenco guitar too! Steve with Billy Idol is like the equivalent of a Joe Perry to Steven Tyler, a Keith Richards to Mick Jagger. They both share the spotlight on stage.

The album failed to crack the Billboard top 100 chart (peaked at 119), presumably due to lack of radio airplay. The only way I know about the song is its use on Australian TV, during the closing credits for the Australian F1 Grand Prix live telecast in the early 1990s. (Channel 9 usually preferred "Born to be Wild" by Steppenwolf for that). Due to its unjust obscurity, I took almost 20 years to discover who performed it - but I never forgot what it sounded like.

There are a lot of good songs on this LP. I have got the vinyl with the Giger drawing. I bought it because I liked it but I've never heard about Steve Stevens before. I am sure that I will listen to this record when I am 70.
@toddvandell855 жыл бұрын
@MrLouisfine I'm willing to bet you've heard Steve Stevens before...although the name might not seem familiar. If I said Billy Idol's long time guitar player, maybe that rings a bell? ☺ Songs like: White Wedding, Dancing With Myself, Rebel Yell, Eyes Without a Face? All Steve Stevens.☺ Vince Neil's first solo album after he quit Motley Crue in the 90s, Exposed? Songs like: You're Invited (But Your Friend Can't Come), Sister of Pain, Can't Have Your Cake (And Eat It Too)? All Steve Stevens. ☺ His name might not be familiar, but if you ever listen to the radio, especially classic rock radio? You've heard Steve Stevens.☺

Then when this solo record came out..Great band he had there. I bought the vinyl! Then I heard him on Vince Neil's solo. Which was so fking good (CD's by then). Bought some of his other records too with BLS and more. My nephew is learning to play guitar. Of Course, I'm gonna turn him on to Steve Stevens! Not only for his rock star look and jams, but his other styles as well. Flamenco. Dennis 61 years ATX

ECHTE lange Haare. In den Rockdiscos sahen alle so aus. Ich auch. Was fuer eine unfassbar tolle Zeit.

His work with Billy Idol on “Whiplash Smile” has cemented him in my eyes as one of the true greats .... that album working with producer Keith Forsey, Marcus Miller on bass, Harold Faltermeyer on keyboards and others, produced what is being now widely regarded as one of the greatest ‘modern’ rock n roll albums of all time. The production and guitar work superb enough to blow any true ‘rockers’ drug-addled brain to mush.

that guitar solo is 'wicked' love it. Inside his playing he 'starts anew' twice per second or so like {&^%$ {&%%^& {&*&&6 {*&^ every time there's a { and its just a little bit forward or something. He pushes those timings forward like waves rolling to a beach over each other every time there's that forward step. He has really weird timing accents there's that 'forward' move every time.
@moosepoop698 жыл бұрын
+Alex stevensen Well yes when soloing you want it to 'move forward' into the next lick and so on, usually building to a climax. That is the key.
@froloffanton6 жыл бұрын
Exactly, Steve's in his shredding prime here (or the Vince Neil solo album), his uneven grouping in 5s or 7s is sick, and love his rubato playing that's jumping between straight notes and triplets.

its a nice notion but in this day and age of samples , digital overprocessing, pro tools and talentless rappers these kids are too busy texting themselves to bother picking up an instrument and taking the time to learn how to play it......why use a knife and fork right to eat a porterhouse when it's easier to be spoon fed shit......right?? not ..

sad but true my friend, ive been playing guitar for 42 years and I busted my ass learning proper technique and strict alternate picking just to be brought our knees by grunge and then the final needle in the neck being rap.......
@rogerkoobjr56413 жыл бұрын
im really sorry to be a naysayer because I really try to see the good in any situation.. but I saw the writing on the wall years ago when this rap garbage was taking over and the kids had no interest in the greatest music ever created which is rock and roll, and let's face it without the kids to pick up where we left off all is truly lost.... l want with all that's good and holy to believe some kids will hear the clarion call and "pick up that guitar and play " as the who so succinctly put it but again, its easier to sit in a highchair and be spoon fed drivel than it is to grow a pair of balls and go through the learning process of an instrument.... when I was a kid my bestie dave played several instruments and was always learning another..but it was the '70s and video games, home computers and cell phones were not in existence yet and kids were left to other devices to kill boredom and music filled the bill better than anything....
