This first live performance of the song stole the show at the Guitar Legends Rock Night, despite other players such as Satriani, Walsh and May. Stunning.

First time i listened steve vai, on Spanish TV in 1991. I have it on a VHS tape recorded from this broadcasting. The whole set. Joe satriani set too. Always remember for the love of god as something imposible to play at that time :). Is a soundtrack of those years for me.

exactly the same experience, I recorded a vhs of this show of both Vai and Satriani and I watched it countless times with a friend. We had just started playing and I had never heard anything like this kind of virtuosistic playing.

This was the time where Steve Vai became the untouchable guitar messiah he is today. The truest guitar songs and most impressive guitar solos are the ones where it feels like the guitar itself is as much a voice as the human voice, where it feels like the guitar is trying to tell you something. And that is exactly what is going on right here, right now. It is the most incredible thing; a man with so much adoration for his instrument in such spiritual and profound sync with it and the song. Vai’s technique here is exceptional, but here, he plays every single phrase, every single second, like the guitar is speaking and he believes every single word it’s saying to the audience. A perfect representation of the culmination of the underlying meaning of “For The Love Of God” as we recognise it today, so much that it embodies Vai as a musician perfectly; blistering technique combined with wondrous soul, emotion and flawlessness, faith and scepticality…passion and warfare. Steve Vai may not be the most recognised guitarist in human history. He may not stand at the same levels of Jimi Hendrix, and his music may be dismissed as too much for the ears of some. But Passion & Warfare is a journey of a million emotions, dreams, states of mind, stories, universes, tenderness and magnificent spiritual beauty that our material minds cannot begin to fathom. When we resonate with it, this man’s music has a profound ability to tell us something that we cannot translate into known words, but our souls and hearts know better than we can comprehend. And that is why it works. This is why Steve Vai sits among the greatest makers of music ever to walk the earth. And I hope that this video inspires others like him to stand up and show the world what they can do, but also that it shows others how desperately our society NEEDS these people. Just something to think about maybe.

Even though his guitar may be a little out of tune. I LOVE his tone here. Marshall amps and Dimarzio PAF Pro pickups! This was a couple years before Dimarzio made his Evolution pickups for him. I think between the Marshalls and the PAF Pros, this tone kills his new tone. Just my opinion of course.

What is it with cameramen filming guitarists? Do they not research it before they film? I was waiting for him to start focusing on his boots because he pointed the camera everywhere apart from where he should have been focusing considering he was filming one of the top guitarists on the planet at the time. So frustrating for people who actually play the instrument to watch.

Out of tune??? I don´t know how you can say that's out of tune.... That guitar is not on earth, it's flying through the outer space. With that sound distorsion being "in tune" is imposible at a the greater part of the song. Simply sideral !!!
@jcdenton6162 жыл бұрын
It is 100% out of tune. I assume you're not a guitar player, because if you were, you'd hear that. And by no means do I mean that in a dick way, I'm just saying that if your ear isn't super tuned up, then it may be tricky to hear how out of tune the guitar actually is. Again, no disrespect.
@MusicissuperiorEVHROX316Ай бұрын
Yeah, it’s ever so slightly out of tune. Just a smidge sharper. Very difficult to notice though, and I actually think it sounds just as beautiful as it does when it’s in tune.
@matthewdrake96996 ай бұрын
He says the word ‘audience’ in an English accent?
@MusicissuperiorEVHROX316Ай бұрын
It’s his Long Island accent. It’s a mixture of the general American accent with the tiniest smidge of a strong New York accent on the words with “au” and softer consonants. Makes it slightly gentler.

Well it wasn’t technically his show I don’t think. I think it was something Brian May was doing and Vai and Satch just got invited. But at the time, Vai was one of if not the biggest name of electric guitar on the planet. Passion & Warfare had gone golden and was captivating millions of people, so it was common politeness to give him this opportunity to play what is now his most popular song to this day. He may have been rushing a tiny bit, but he certainly took his time with the ambient section at the end.
