Being a huge fan of this album since I was a teenager, I am shocked at this video. Never imagined that the man himself would give a class on how to play this increible masterpiece.

I remember learning it from tab in the 90s, a bit of a cold way to learn a song. A much deeper, reinforcing, and intuitive experience to learn from Vai himself and hear how the song developed, the exercises he was experimenting with at the time, etc. I wonder if he feels Jimi’s chord melody style influenced his choices in the various fills between the chords. Uses some of the same voicings as Castles Made of Sand, which to me sets the bar for this style of chord melody.

It's great that he's such a master and shares his knowledge, plus he's such a genuinely nice guy who wants to help players of all levels. But honestly, there's just something about his voice when he tells stories and discusses things. It's a very comforting tone of voice he has, I could listen to him all day.

Yeah I know what you mean. He's talking very naturally and smoothly. He should have a radio show

That is literally what I just said to myself while watching this: 'I could listen to him all day long'. I had this incredible chance to meet Steve during one of the meet and greets and listen to him and chat for a solid hour. It was incredible experience, he has a wonderful soul, very approachable personality and he just oozes peace and positivity.

This song is an incredible piece. I've been playing guitar (seriously) for about ten months, and for the past five or six I've been trying to learn this song. Now I can play the song accurately for the first minute or so, and while that may not be impressive to many people, it's so rewarding.

I just heard the song for the first time on the radio program I'm listening to. So I came here to check out different videos I might find. As soon as he said he wrote it for his sisters, his best friends, I smiled. What a guy!

In my mind he will always be the wine drinking hotshot headcutter from Crossroads. Lol I always cringe when he hits the sour notes and drops his guitar at the end. I just want to rescue all the guitars. XD

I've always LOVED this song. Back when this album came out I had it on cassette ( yep, I'm old.) and would go riding my motorcycle. This song would come on and I could drift away even further mentally. It still takes me back to that time and then off into the nether regions of my mind. It's bliss........

He makes any peice of music look simple. It's cool he does these videos to share his knowledge. Many people in his abilities won't really share their knowledge. I love Joe Satriani's music but when he explains something, it's like on another mental level.

These micro tonal frets are supposed to take out the tuning faults in a guitar ,however finely you tune or set up a guitar there are always places on the neck or chords that don't sound right ,that's what these frets are for

This wonderful virtuoso guitar player makes it look so easy but “Sisters” needs a lot of practice to get right. “Tender Surrender” is another beautiful piece from Vai with a huge crescendo and then gets back to the intro. It has a beautiful classical structure. Note that Steve Vai adored Frank Zappa and auditioned for Zappa at 17 years old 👏. Listen to a story from Tommy Mars, a keyboardist in Zappa’s band at the time🤗 during the eighties. Steve wrote a piece simply called “Frank” in memory of Zappa.👍 These guys are great guitarists.👍👏 I wonder if Zappa’s “What’s new in Baltimore?” preceded “Sisters”? Both very similar pieces with melody interwoven into chords.

I find it hard to believe that the author of those exceptional guitar parts on Eat 'Em and Smile, thought it was news that you should have guitar parts in a song and not just chugging chords. Perhaps Vai just assumed that Ozzy's music would be basic power metal and he could phone it in until the solo? I mean, when you hire Vai, you WANT those unique guitar parts he comes up with, not a Joe Satriani backing track.

@ZFlyingVLover8 жыл бұрын
I find it interesting how the pros have these guitars with frets positioned in just the 'right' spot to give a true representation for the associated tone and they still don't sound any better or sound less organic than the traditional straight fret guitars with all their 'errors' in tone. I wonder if it's been driven more by the guitar building industry than the artists themselves in order to charge more money. Sorry. just thinking out loud. Love steve vai's songs and quirkly melody's. But I don't think his tone was ever really pleasant. Always sounded kinda 'flat'. Just a comment. Don't flame me.
@TheSammyreynolds8 жыл бұрын
Generally I agree but "For the Love of God" his tone is stellar.
@MaggaraMarine8 жыл бұрын
It may not sound different to the listener but I'm sure it makes a difference to the player. When you play a chord that sounds a bit out of tune, it just doesn't feel good. The listener may not notice anything wrong with it but if you can't get the sound that you are looking for, it can ruin the mood for you. It may feel like the instrument is limiting your expression because it can't produce the sounds that you are after. Steve Vai could make any guitar sound good and the listener wouldn't really be able to tell the difference between him playing on a cheap Ibanez GIO and his signature JEM. But to the player it makes a lot bigger difference. And the better you are, the more the little nuances in sound matter. Also, the tone has little to do with true temperament frets vs regular frets. A good tone is a lot more about the amp and the effects you are using (and of course your settings). True temperament frets just fix slight intonation issues that the regular listener most likely doesn't even notice. I don't think his guitar was perfectly in tune here, though.
@SufferDYT8 жыл бұрын
The guitar is an improperly built instrument. It's impossible to tune a guitar with straight frets in such a way that every possible chord you could play would be in tune because straight frets are only approximate. The point of true temperament frets is to have every note be perfectly intonated. If you were to tune a guitar with straight frets so that a chord was perfectly in tune but then play a different chord, that chord would be out of tune. Having the frets like this fixes that. And tone is subjective, but Vai's tone is anything but flat.
@abnzg8 жыл бұрын
The crazy frets aren't there to sound better for the listener, they're there to make the guitar easier to play for the player.
@MaggaraMarine8 жыл бұрын
abnzg Nah, they don't make the guitar easier to play. They just help with the intonation. So they do kind of make the guitar sound better. They don't affect the tone per se, but good intonation sounds better than bad intonation.
