I have watched this video many times. I just can't get over how nothing can stop this guy from playing at a level that is beyond almost any other guitar player. I have no idea what planet vai came from, but I am pretty sure everyone on that planet plays guitar. :) Beyond his amazing abilities, and control of hammer-ons and pull-offs, this composition is incredible. Music flows through his veins, right out of his fingers and into the instrument. Never seen anything like it.
@dleasman3 жыл бұрын
@@afronprime51 He plays clean enough that constant muting is not necessary, and he does mute them here and there. Though, part of his "secret sauce" is that he usually has a sustainer installed on the neck pickup. That allows him to keep it all flowing without picking, but a sustainer would get those unmuted strings moving in less than a second. But it sure looks like a live performance... Truth be told, he is that good! But I understand your suspicion about the lack of muting... I noticed it on my first viewing of the video.

Am I the only one who's totally impressed that there's no wrap on the neck to mute the strings?

No, his legato and left hand string muting is out of this world. Truly alien.

I was thinking the same thing until I read the description. He's very honest about using a piece of cloth at the nut and he didn't have to be. I was completely fooled. Thank you Steve for letting us in on this little "secret". Still, he did say that 80 - 90% is without this help. Very well done indeed.

@SteveVaiHimself Steve, this is such inspiration. I had a bike accident two months ago and tore the UCL in my left thumb, which required surgery to repair. I had the surgery about 5 weeks ago, but I have not been able to pick up a guitar for the past two months. I am now finally getting enough strength and mobility to add guitar into my physical therapy, and playing my Onyx PIA has become so "instrumental" to my recovery and finding joy again! It's light and easy to play and just so great. And brings me back to watching you so amazingly go through shoulder recovery using the same guitar in Knappsack. Thanks so much!

His expressiveness just shows his mind is beyond the realm of notes, chords, beats and measures, the music is literally just flowing out of him. Even one-handed, it is a true extension of his mind and soul. You are a genius, and my greatest inspiration to never stop improving. Thank you, Vai!

This reminds me of "Skyscraper". In 1989, I was in school at BYU and skiing at Solitude and Brighton a lot. I had the new Walkman cassette player with headphones! Imagine getting off the lift with the cold air and the mountain view and hitting play, "I'm a Skyscraper" and into Steve's lead as you cut moguls or speed down the middle of a blue run!

its so beautiful and flawless! what I dont get though, that despite his solid technique there is ZERO string noise from the other strings considering hes not muting with his right nor has a dampener on..thats crazy
@MundMoriginal2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, well, could only be explained with noise gates. You can't practise away resonance from the notes, so if you don't mute it, you'll need electronical help.
@markthomasnoonan2 жыл бұрын
It’s mentioned in the video description that multiple takes have been comped together here, and that in the parts where a mute was needed, it was used. The video just shows one take with nothing muting the strings.
@superceotto45842 жыл бұрын
0:33 you can hear string noise, but I guess he used a gate or something to mute them.

In a world where so many "virtuoso" guitar players are being left in the dust do to the availability of information from the internet, guitar pro tabs and the rest (time) Steve vai still some how remains relevant to this day, he still stands tall among all the other modern players, it's super impressive
@anthonytsi3 жыл бұрын
What kind of trickery is this. No muting pads. Heavy sound gate perhaps? No notes are ringing from the open strings. I love you Vai ! Surgery on his fretting hand for trigger thumb and still does this. Vai, you have an incredible sense of focus and a "can and will do" attitude. Recover your thumb without damaging it. You have nothing more to prove to us. You are a guitar GOD.
@bsatyam3 жыл бұрын
A gate would only help if it were active on each string seperately. In this case if any string generates sound exceeding threshold, the gate will open and let all the strings through (since a pickup is mono output, not 6 separate channels for each string). It's a testament to how good his technique is, no trickery needed.
@tarnishedchosenundead3 жыл бұрын
Read the description, he did put a piece of cloth to dampen some noise, and a few parts are edited from other takes. Still, it's an amazing display of skill.
