As you get older, you begin to see your life becoming less and less relevant, because each year brings new heartache as you notice the people you grew up with, friends, relatives and of course celebrities becoming frail and in some cases they pass away. This is part of all our lives sadly, it’s just the way things are. Steve Wright was a huge part of my younger self and to know he has gone, well it saddens me greatly. As a young working man in the 80’s, I listened to Steve every day in the factory where I did my apprenticeship. I remember how we would all be in hysterics listening to him and his crew take on the many zany characters that brought tears of laughter to my eyes so often. Then in later years, his afternoon show on BBC2, a ‘slightly’ more matured Steve, but with all the warmth and humour intact. Just a wonderful guy in every sense. I know he was a bit of a tortured soul, as are many who open their hearts so freely and who give so much of themselves to others. I hope he has found peace now, and if there is a god, a heaven, I know Steve will be playing all his favourite hits there for eternity. God bless you Steve Wright.

Lovely tribute and you speak for everyone who listened to Steve over the last 40 years. I don't think I have ever been so affected by a celebrity passing. I think that no matter where you were or whatever mood, Steve was always a comfort and a sense of familiarity. That was his aim after all to create a feel good factor for the nation.

@@sicks6six he had a formula that worked, as I said audience figures had dropped 8% since his departure from the afternoon slot, I don't see the point of the ad hominem attacks on his lifestyle/appearance? What's that got to do with a radio show? He was replaced simply because of the woke narrative, he doesn't fall into the box ticking criteria that is ubiquitous in all forms of media now, radio was his life and I believe he died of a broken heart, your subjective critique comes with no likes, and no interest so why don't you go and troll somewhere else?

Totally agree. To carry out this level of quality day in day out is astonishing. Steve's shows were always a lot more than just playing music and his taste in music was bloody good as well. His shows were whole entertainment features. Doing this once a week would gave been a serious achievement for most people, but doing it every was phenomenal. Its sad that even after giving the nation and even beyond so much pleasure for the last 40 years all he gets is a paltry mbe. I started listening to Steve Wright In The Afternoon in the 1980s working in a factory during the student holidays. An absolute legend of the UK dies and yet we still get these right wing nutters using his death as an opportunity to slag off the BBC. Steve wasn't bitter that his time slot was given to someone new. He understood that's how it works. The BBC gave Steve the platform to entertain us kids back in the 1980's and we loved it. He was still working for the BBC over 40 years later. Give us all a break and appreciate the talent we have just lost. RIP the best DJ we've ever seen. ❤

I had the pleasure of spending time with Steve. But unfortunately not since lockdown. Behind the scenes he was very sensitive and self hating, he hated how he looked and was actively trying to lose weight to regain some confidence and improve his health. The afternoon show was his reason to get out of bed, and he joked so was the ridiculous amount of money he got paid for pressing buttons. He told me he would do it for free, but don’t tell the bosses. I can only imagine how much losing that show crushed him. He wouldn’t attend showbiz parties in the evening because he wanted to ensure he was on top form for his listeners each day. Everything he did was for others. I really hope it isn’t suicide, it pains me to think he was that low. He was the kindest person I’ve ever encountered.
