I like it! I have another impression, if I may. The version as written: the Lover sings of love at Christmastime in an intentionally superficial way. The song exudes an excess of sweetness and light by design. The harmonies echo with superfluous ornamentation. The "Innocent Lover" sanitizes the concept of love to the point that it's as ephemeral and idealistic as a story about Santa Claus to her. The version in negative harmony: The Innocent Lover is becoming the Actualized Lover, and -- much like a goddess of love -- she now understands the darkness of love.
