I'm thinking that sports psychology and some work on focus and preparedness is what is needed here. The deal is that you have to come out and play and give it your best on *every* shift for 60 minutes. There is no explanation for goals five and six last night, except that there were some guys on the ice who were physically present, but mentally checked out. If you are a professional hockey player, there are about 12 - 16 hours a week when you cannot allow that to happen when it is your turn. During those game time hours, you have to find a way to be a 100% engaged when you jump over those boards. Incidentally, this is even harder for goaltenders ... but no goaltender has ever been really successful without finding a way to master this skill, and get refocused and ready every time the puck starts heading in their direction. So goalies actively work at this. Skaters need to also, and it seems like the Leafs skaters *really* need to make an effort here.

I would be more worried if Keefe had the team at the start of the year. I give him a month to find the right system in the defensive zone, and to find a way to motivate the right players. Marc Crawford was quite complimentary of Matthews' defensive game. Where has that player gone? Maybe they need to find some video from his year in Switzerland to show him what he did there to garner that praise? I mean, we all know by now that motivating players is a special art, and that past methods are not viewed in a good light. No touching (well, that was never right anyway), no yelling, no benching, no demeaning players, no head games, no being mean, etc. Just a gentle pat on the back and encouragement to do better, along with a nice colouring book and puppies, I guess. What kind of puppy does Matthews need folks?

we can't and we didn't. i've watched this team since 1993 to the point i have an extrasensory feeling about them. 2 periods go by and i knew this game was over...because there's just nothing there...even on the breakaway, the 2v1 and it wasn't hart, it was this lethargy feeling i got from the leafs. i don't know why a team of guys, almost all under 30, have no energy most of the time. are they eating poorly? no sleep? a drug problem, perhaps......i keep expecting this franchise to magically be the yankees where everyone plays for the uniform and not the name but it just doesn't happen, in fact, that's closer to montreal. montreal can make magic happen, go to the third round twice with a terrible team...toronto finds ways to lose. you don't see many teams like that in sports because even bad teams or bad players have pride and will try hard. look at phoenix...by no means is that a good team on paper...somehow they win. i guess this is my voldemort moment; the thing i will never understand.

i think its the lack of competition or urgency, let me clarify. Yes Leafs are the biggest news in hockey every day, everything gets dissected on molecular level over and over. How about the fans? They keep buying the most expensive tickets in the NHL, buying merchandise, the Leafs organisation is making money year in year out regardless of the season outcome. Leafs got no competition in the market, no teams can take away their fans unless its a new team in Ontario which will never happen. So what? Business is good. Why worry? No need to stress out. No pressure. Players asking for over market salary bcs they play in Toronto instead of being proud that they can actually play for such a franchise! and they get it, why not Leafs are rich. Is this starting to make sense?
